Spartan Women Start 2105 With Two Wins

YORK, PA – The York College women's swim team opened up the 2015 portion of their schedule with a pair of non-conference victories on Friday night in York. The Spartans defeated Gallaudet 126-47 and Penn State Mont Alto 115-57.

York improves to 3-7 overall with the two wins as the Spartans snap a seven-match losing streak.

The Spartans got off to a great start in capturing the victory in the 400 medley relay. The York foursome of Kate McConaghy (Phoenixville, Pa./Owen J. Roberts), Courtney Dacheux (Dover, Pa./Dover), Kacey Banks (Silver Spring, Md./Spencerville Adventist Academy), and Danielle Werner (Pittsburgh, Pa./Hampton) combined to record a winning time of 4:28.47 in the event.

McConaghy and Dacheux got right back into the pool to go one-two in the 1000 freestyle. McConaghy recorded a winning time of 12:07.01 while Dacheux rolled in as the runner-up with a time of 12:28.19.

York continued to rack up points in the 200 freestyle as the Green and White went one-two Taylor Witte (University Park, Md./St. John's College) and Brianna Blackwell (Chandler, Ariz./Hamilton). Witte swam in heat two and recorded a winning time of 2:14.75. Blackwell finished second in a time of 2:17.03.

Senior Sammy Greenwald (Germantown, Md./Northwestern) earned a win in the 50 free as she touched the wall in a time of 27.78 to earn the win. Madison Tonkay (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield) finished second with a time of 2:17.03.

York recorded another two top finishes in the 200 IM as Sara Zalkind (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown West) edged Tonkay for the victory. Zalkind notched a time of 2:32.02 while Tonkay recorded a time of 2:32.84.

Banks notched a runner-up finish in the 100 fly wit ha time of 1:07.00 while Tonkay finished third at 1:13.90.

York recorded another one-two finish in the 100 free as Werner and Blackwell finished tops in the race. Werner notched a time of 59.36 while Blackwell touched the wall in a time of 1:02.44.

In the 100 backstroke, the tandem of Greenwald and Zalkind again earned top points for York. Greenwald won the event with a time of 1:08.43 while Zalkind was right behind at 1:09.69.

The Green and White continued to roll in the 500 free with Maria Allera (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) and Witte finishing one-two. Allera won the race in a time of 5:57.73 while Witte touched the wall in a time of 6:15.82.

The Spartans swam the final two events as exhibitions in the double win.

York returns to action on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Frostburg State University to face the Bobcats and Randolph-Macon College in a tri-meet. The action is set for a 1:00 pm start.
