Spartan Men Cruise to a Pair of Wins to Open 2015

YORK, PA – The York College men's swim team stayed hot as the Green and White picked up a pair of non-conference wins on Friday night in York. The Spartans downed Gallaudet 140-48 and Penn State Mont Alto 120-49.

York improves to 9-1 overall with the two wins.

The men got off to a rousing start with a first and second place finish in the 400 medley relay. The winning foursome of Tim DeCoursey (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West), Tim McCullough (Rose Valley, Pa./Strath Haven), Morgan Schreiber (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove), and Russell Stoll (Pompton Lakes, N.J./Pompton Lakes) cruised to a winning time of 3:53.91. The team of Donald Timmerman (Randolph, N.J./Randolph), Javier Rivera (Bowie, Md./Bishop McNamara), Bryant Hughes (Middletown, Del./Caravel Academy), and Cody Latchford (New Castle, Del./William Penn) combined to finish second with a time of 4:14.67.

In the 1000 free, the Spartans again went one-two as David Altobelli (Silver Spring, Md./James Hubert Blake) and Shane Bonner (Ridley Park, Pa./Ridley) earned the top two spots in the race. Altobelli checked in with a time of 11:13.23 to record the win while Bonner was just over six seconds back at 11:19.26.

Junior All-American Kyle Walthall (Port Hueneme, Calif./Rio Mesa) picked up a win in the 200 free as he completed the race in a time of 1:52.33. Nick Leidy (Leesport, Pa./Schulykill Valley) finished third while Timmerman placed fourth.

Hughes won the 50 free as he covered the pool in a time of 22.45. Freshman Artem Peshenko (Elkins Park, Pa./Abington) came in second in the event with a time of 23.25.

Stoll picked up his first individual win of the night as he won the 200 IM in a time of 2:07.58. Sophomore Cameron Byrne (Farmingville, N.Y./Sachem East) was second with a time of 2:13.19.

Bonner posted a runner-up finish in the 100 fly for the Spartans. He registered a time of 55.98 as he was edged out by Mont Alto's Zachary Jones, who recorded a time of 55.62.

The Spartans earned a one-two-three finish in the 100 free. Altobelli won the event with a time of 51.87 followed by Latchford at 49.64 and Walthall at 52.22.

York dominated the 500 free event. Hughes picked up his second individual win of the night as he touched the wall in a time of 5:18.18 followed by Leidy, McCullough, and Timmerman.

The Spartans swam the final two events as exhibition to close out the win.

York gets right back into the pool on Saturday when they travel to Frostburg State to face the Bobcats and Randolph-Macon in a tri-meet. The meet is scheduled for a 1:00 pm start.
