Wagner Remains Perfect as Spartans Fall to Messiah

GRANTHAM, PA – The York College women's tennis team suffered their first setback of the 2014 fall campaign as the Messiah College Falcons downed the Spartans 7-2 in non-conference action on Tuesday in Grantham, Pa.

The Spartans fall to 2-1 with the loss while the Falcons are now 2-0.

The Falcons captured the three doubles matches but the Spartans' number one duo of Katie Wagner (Glen Rock, Pa./Susquehannock) and Darian Naill (New Windsor, Md./South Carroll) pushed the Falcon tandem of Ashli Livermore and Kelly Hopkins to the brink before falling 8-6.

Messiah escaped with a third doubles win as Sydney Schandel and Carly Dove edged Emily Skutnik (Effort, Pa./Pleasant Valley) and Makenzie Krout (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) 9-7.

Wagner continued to roll in number one singles as the freshman improved to 3-0 with her 6-4, 6-2 win over Livermore. Messiah captured the second, third, and fourth singles before Skutnik earned a solid 6-2, 6-2 win over Meagan Scala in the fifth singles match. The Falcons closed out the match with a sixth singles win.

The Spartans return to action on Saturday, October 4 when they host Immaculata in a home match. The contest is slated for a 1:00 pm start.
