YORK, PA – The York College women's tennis team opened their 2014 fall season with a tight 5-4 win over Catholic University on Sunday in York.
The Spartans are now 1-0 while the Cardinals fall to 0-1.
The Green and White got off to a good start in doubles action as the Spartans captured two of three points. The Spartan tandem of Emily Price (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll) and Megan Jones (Felton, Pa./Red Lion) combined to earn an 8-6 second doubles win. Makenzie Krout (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) and Emily Skutnik (Effort, Pa./Pleasant Valley) then teamed up to earn an 8-2 third doubles win.
In singles play, freshman Katie Wagner (Glen Rock, Pa./Susquehannock) started her Spartan career with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Laura Torsiello in the first singles match. Price followed that up with a 7-6 (4), 6-2 win in the second singles match.
The Cardinals notched wins in the third, fourth, and fifth singles match before Jones earned a hard-fought 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over Reilly Abbot, clinching the win for the Spartans.
The Spartans return to action on Saturday, September 20 when they travel to Stevenson University to face the Mustangs in a non-conference contest. The match is slated for a 11:00 am start.
