YORK, PA – The York College men's tennis team opened the 2014 portion of their schedule with a 6-3 non-conference win over Catholic University on a sunny Sunday in York.
The Spartans are now 1-0 while the Cardinals fall to 0-2.
The Green and White captured two of the three doubles points to jump out to an early lead.
The Cardinals won the number one doubles match 8-1 but the Spartans roared back to take the second doubles match 8-2 as Jake Greenstein (Morris Plains, N.J./Parsippany Hills) and Matt Rosenkrantz (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow) earned the win. Zach Hanson (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock) and Rory Handlin (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) teamed up to post an 8-5 win in the third doubles match.
The Cardinals started off singles play with a Juan Lorido win in the first singles match. The Spartans then ripped off four straight singles wins started off by Greenstein as he downed Rocky Alaqbani 6-0, 6-4 in the second singles match.
Rosenkrantz defeated Jon Lasota 6-1, 6-2 in the third singles contest. Sophomore Kaltrin Ballaj (Glen Rock, Pa./Susquehannock) edged Robert Alexander 7-6 (1), 6-3 for the fourth singles victory. Daniel Erk (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) gave York the win with a three-set victory over Conor Wilson in the fifth singles match.
The Spartans return to action on Saturday when they travel to Stevenson and Goucher. The Spartans face the Mustangs at 11:00 am followed by a trip to square off against the Gophers at 4:00 pm.
