YORK, PA – The York College men's swim team had a banner day on Saturday as they swept a trio of teams in an exciting meet in York. The Green and White defeated St. Mary's (112-92), Dickinson (108-96), and St. Vincent (108-96) during the day.
The Spartans improve to 5-1 overall as they have won four straight. The Green and White also improves to 2-1 in the Capital Athletic Conference.
The men got an early lead on the field in the 400 medley relay as the foursome of Morgan Schreiber (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove), Kyle Walthall (Port Hueneme, Calif./Rio Mesa), Cody Latchford (New Castle, Del./William Penn), and Shane Bonner (Ridley Park, Pa./Ridley) cruised to the win as they touched the wall in a combined time of 3:26.80.
In the 1000 free, Latchford notched a seventh place finish, completing the race in a time of 10:47.45. Teammate David Altobelli (Silver Spring, Md./James Hubert Blake) placed eighth with a time of 10:59.66.
The Green and White gained valuable points in the 200 free as three Spartans earned top six finishes. Schreiber recorded a third place finish, touching the wall in a time of 1:49.47. Teammate Bryant Hughes (Middletown, Del./Caravel Academy) was just behind him, as he placed fourth with a time of 1:50.44. Sophomore Tim DeCoursey (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) was sixth as he notched a time of 1:52.98.
Bonner led the Spartan charge in the 50 free as he recorded a second place finish with a time of 22:56, .8 seconds back of winner Zach Ligus from St. Vincent. Sophomore Nick Lucash (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) placed fifth with a time of 23.35.
Walthall had a fantastic race in the 200 IM as he was narrowly edged out by St. Vincent's Xander Emili. Walthall's time of 2:03.0 was 1.39 seconds back of Emili. Altobelli checked in with a seventh place finish, completing the race in a time of 2:09.42 while Donald Timmerman (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) was right behind him in eighth with a time of 2:11.15.
Sophomore Russell Stoll (Pompton Lakes, N.J./Pompton Lakes) swam well in the 200 fly as he placed fourth with a time of 2:06.72.
The Green and White picked up valuable points in the 100 free as they picked up a pair of top four finishes. Hughes placed third with a time of 49.63 while Bonner was right behind him in fourth with a time of 49.95.
Schreiber continued his strong meet in the 200 backstroke as the freshman was victorious, out touching Dickinson's Chris Miles by .43 seconds as Schreiber notched a time of 2:01.08. Altobelli placed fourth in the race as he recorded a time of 2:07.60.
Stoll and Latchford came up big in the 500 free as the tandem finished fourth and fifth in the event. Stoll recorded a time of 5:05.36 while Latchford was right on his heels as he finished with a time of 5:05.37.
Walthall then did his thing in the 200 breaststroke as he crushed the field in another victory. He notched a winning time of 2:08.84. That time was 8.36 seconds in front of the runner up finisher. Timmerman also swam well in the event as he placed fifth with a time of 2:18.80. Sophomore Tim McCullough (Rose Valley, Pa./Strath Haven) earned a seventh place finish to boost the Spartans' point total.
The Spartans sealed the win with a third place finish in the 400 freestyle relay. The foursome of DeCoursey, Cameron Byrne (Farmingville, N.Y./Sachem East), Nick Leidy (Leesport, Pa./Schuylkill Valley), and Hughes did a fantastic job of holding on to the third place finish as they edged St. Vincent for the finish. The Spartan team combined to record a time of 3:21.96. The final stretch of the race electrified the crowd as the Spartan squad erupted on the pool deck when the finish enabled the Green and White to sweep the day.
The Spartans look to continue their momentum on Wednesday night when they travel to Messiah to face the Falcons in a non-conference meet. The meet is slated for a 6:00 pm start in Grantham, Pa.
