Spartan Men Cruise to a Season Opening Win

ELIZABETHTOWN, PA – The York College men's swim squad rolled to a season-opening 127-44 win at Elizabethtown College on Saturday afternoon.

The Spartans notched wins in one relay and seven individual events in the team victory.

The 200 medley relay team started off the day wit ha win in the event as the foursome of Morgan Schreiber (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove), Kyle Walthall (Port Hueneme, Calif./Rio Mesa), Cody Latchford (New Castle, Del./William Penn), and Bryant Hughes (Middletown, Del./Caravel Academy) combined to notch a winning time of 1:40.61. 

Latchford picked up a win in the 1000 free as he touched the wall in a time of 10:59.47. Matt Terrell (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) recorded a second place finish in the event as he notched a time of 11:03.38.

Hughes recorded York's next win, as he was first in the 200 free with a time of 1:51.63.

Freshman Nick Lucash (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) led a strong performance in the 50 free as the Spartans swept the top three spots. Lucash won with a time of 23.51 while Cameron Byrne (Farmingville, N.Y./Sachem East) place second at 23.78 followed by Russell Stoll (Pompton Lakes, N.J./Pompton Lakes) in third at 24.07.

Walthall cruised to a win in the 200 IM as he completed the race in a time of 2:03.72. David Altobelli (Silver Spring, Md./James Hubert Blake) placed second with a time of 2:10.87 while Donald Timmerman (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) placed third at 2:14.05.

Latchford earned his second win of the day, as he was victorious in the 100 fly, recording a time of 58.15. Stoll placed second, just .55 seconds back of Latchford.

Martin Dichmann-Schmidt (Pilesgrove, N.J./Woodstown) led a trio of Spartan place winners in the 100 backstroke. He won with a time of 1:02.01, edging freshman teammate Billy Sieck (Schuylkill Haven, Pa./Schuylkill Haven) by .42 seconds. Erick Edwards (Bethlehem, Pa./Saucon Valley) placed third with a time of 1:04.31.

York had another strong performance in the 500 free as they notched another one-two-three finish. Tim DeCoursey (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) won with a time of 5:21.66. He was followed by Altobelli and Tim McCullough (Rose Valley, Pa./Strath Haven).

The Spartans swam their final two events as exhibition as the win was well in hand.

The Spartans return to action on Halloween night as they travel to Mary Washington for their Capital Athletic Conference opener.
