Box Score YORK, PA – The University of Mary Washington Eagles scored a late goal in regulation to forge a 1-1 Capital Athletic Conference tie with the York College Spartans in women's soccer action in York on Saturday.
The Spartans now stand at 6-3-3 overall and 2-1-1 in the CAC while the Eagles are 7-4-2 overall and 1-2-1 in the league.
The Spartans took the play to the Eagles early and often before finding the back of the net in the 13th minute of play. Sophomore Jordan Neiheiser (Reading, Pa./Berks Catholic) collected a ball along the left wing. She carried the ball towards the box before sliding a nifty pass to Shyanne Kimbrough (York, Pa./West York). Kimbrough collected the pass and banged home her second goal of the year to stake the Spartans to the early lead.
The Green and White continued to dominate the play the remainder of the first half but their inability to finish would come back to haunt them late in the game. Kimbrough had a chance for a second goal in the 29th minute but Eagle keeper Charlotte Owens made a nice diving save to deny Kimbrough the tally.
The Green and White finished the opening half with an 8-1 margin in total shots and a 3-1 edge in shots on goal.
The Eagles picked up their play out of the intermission as the play began to even out. Mary Washington had their first good opportunity of the day in the 62nd minute when Taylor Decker hit a solid shot that went just wide left of the cage.
The Green and White had a flurry in the 87th minute as Owens had to make another save to keep the Eagles' one goal deficit.
That proved to be huge as the Spartans got called for a foul and a red card trying to clear the ball in their own end with 14.3 seconds left in regulation. The resulting foul gave the Eagles a direct kick just outside the box. The Eagles capitalized as they flooded the box with three on-rushing attackers. Lizzie Weast's pass into the box was banged home by Sam Lockley, tying the game at one with 9.3 seconds left in regulation.
The teams headed to overtime and York would have the best chance in the first overtime as Jordan Snook (Stewartstown, Pa./Kennard-Dale) hit a shot that floated agonizingly wide of the goal in the 96th minute.
The Green and White had another opportunity in the later stages of the second overtime as Chelsea McDowell (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) hit a long, but strong, shot off a restart that Owens stopped initially. Neiheiser collected the rebound but couldn't finish the chance as he shot slid wide of the mark as the Spartans had to settle for the hard-to-swallow conference tie.
The Green and White finished the game outshooting the Eagles 20-10 including 6-3 in shots on goal. The Spartans also had a 6-0 margin in corner kicks.
Melanie Glessner (Waldorf, Md./Thomas Stone) notched the tie as she recorded a pair of saves for the Spartans. Owens recorded five saves for the Eagles in her 110 minutes of work.
The Spartans take to the road on Wednesday when they head to Frostburg State to take on the Bobcats in a CAC contest. Game time in Frostburg is set for 7:00 pm.
