WASHINGTON, DC – The York College women's tennis team dropped their fall season opener as they fell to the Catholic Cardinals 5-4 on Monday in Washington, DC. The Spartans are now 0-1 while the Cardinals improve to 3-2.
The Cardinals captured two of the three doubles matches to take the early 2-1 lead. The Spartan duo of Katelyn Acker and Samantha Brenner posted a solid 8-3 win in the first doubles match.
Acker made herself a double winner in the singles match as the junior posted a 7-5, 7-6 first singles victory over Elaina Sceusa. Acker, who went 12-7 last year, earned her 24th career singles win with the victory over Sceusa.
Newcomer Kacie Weatherhead earned her first win in the Green and White with a convincing 6-0, 6-4 win over Ritmarie Holden in the second singles match. The Cardinals rebounded to take the third and fourth singles matches before sophomore Arcondia Vlahos notched a 6-4, 6-3 win in the fifth singles, tying the overall match at three. Catholic pulled out a 6-2, 6-2 win the sixth singles match for the win.
The Spartans return to action on Friday, September 23 when they travel to the University of Mary Washington for the three-day ITA Regional Tournament.
