SALISBURY, MD – The York College men's tennis squad saw
their 2010 campaign officially come to an end Tuesday afternoon as
they fell to #21 Salisbury 9-0 in the semifinal round of the
Capital Athletic Conference Tournament. The Spartans finish the
season with a 9-9 overall record while the second-seeded Sea Gulls
improve to 14-6 and move on to face perennial powerhouse Mary
Washington in Friday's conference championship match.
The Spartans fell behind 3-0 after the trio of doubles matches
gave the home squad three-match lead.
The story remained the same throughout singles play as Salisbury
swept through each of the six matches. York's Ryan Harvey
(Fallston, Md./Fallston), who put together a solid junior
campaign, provided the Spartans' best effort in sixth singles.
Harvey stretched the match to three games but did eventually drop
the third set to Marcus Robinson 6-2, 3-6, 10-4. He finishes the
season with the Green and White's best individual mark of 15-4,
including his win over Grand Rapids Community College.
This loss marks the end of the collegiate careers of seniors
Steve
Collison (Westville, N.J./Woodbury) and Paul Graci
(Exton, Pa./Bishop Shanahan). Over their respective
careers, Collison amassed a total singles record of 37-16 and a
22-16 mark in doubles play while Graci garnered a 30-23 singles
record and a 22-14 doubles mark. Playing a majority of their
doubles matches together, the duo combined for a 21-14 doubles mark
during their three seasons.
Despite the loss of their two senior leaders, the Spartans
return four of their six singles starters as well as their second
and third doubles partnerships. With such experience coming back to
the lineup in 2011, as all four returning starters will be seniors,
the Green and White are primed for a strong season.
