YORK, PA – The York College women's tennis squad saw their
2010 campaign come to a finish on Sunday afternoon as they fell to
St. Mary's by a tight 5-4 score in the first round of the Capital
Athletic Conference Tournament. The defeat gives the Spartans a 7-9
mark for the spring campaign while the Seahawks improve to 10-9 and
now move on to face Salisbury in the semifinals on Tuesday.
The Spartans' four victories came by way of two doubles
and two singles wins.
Beginning with doubles play, the duo of Katelyn Acker
(Narvon, Pa./Pequea Valley) and Stephanie Nelson
(Marriottsville, Md./Liberty) combined to secure the first
doubles triumph. In their only match together this season, Acker
and Nelson bested St. Mary's Michelle Compton and Chelsea
Bradcovich in a close 9-7 match.
Samantha Hunt (Albany, N.Y./Albany) and
Sarah Walsh (Nottingham, Pa./Oxford Area) added
York's second doubles point by winning the third slot.
Joining as a pair for only the second time, Hunt and Walsh
registered an 8-4 victory over Maria Rau and Shelby Mullennix to
end the season with a 1-1 doubles mark.
In singles it would be Acker and Nelson that secured points for
the Green and White. Acker defeated Compton in the #1 spot with a
straight set 6-2, 6-3 result. Including York's fall match
against Messiah, Acker finishes her sophomore season with a solid
11-6 record.
Nelson's victory came in the fourth singles slot against
Rau. The Spartan junior nabbed her ninth victory with a 6-3, 6-2
result.
With the loss, the Green and White bid adieu to senior captain
Paige Doutrich (Gap, Pa./Pequea Valley) who was a
solid leader for the Spartan side. As one of only two upperclassmen
this season, Doutrich provided the young Spartans with a veteran
presence.
Despite Doutrich's departure, the York squad welcomes back
five of their six regular singles starters next season. Slated to
be a more experienced yet still young team next year, as only
Nelson is set to be a senior in 2011, the program looks toward a
promising future.
