YORK, PA – The York College men's tennis squad
evened their 2010 record on Monday afternoon with an 8-1 triumph
over visiting Messiah. The Spartans improve to 8-8 on the season
and have won three of their last four matches.
The Green and White began the contest with a sweep of the three
doubles matches. Colin Jones (Felton, Pa./Red
Lion) and Travis Klein (East Stroudsburg,
Pa./Pocono Mountain East) cruised to an 8-1 victory in the
second doubles slot. Phllip Myers (York, Pa./William
Penn) and James Villari (Clark, N.J./Arthur L.
Johnson), combining for the fourth time this season,
picked up the their doubles win with an 8-2 triumph. Myers and
Villari now sport a 3-1 record together in 2010.
In first doubles, the senior tandem of Paul Graci
(Exton, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) and Steve Collison
(Westville, N.J./Woodbury) struggled slightly but were
able to pull out the victory. The duo notched a hard fought 8-5 win
to pick up their sixth official victory this season.
In singles play, Collison posted a straight set 6-0, 6-2 victory
over Luke Hostetter in the second slot. The senior now owns,
including his match against Grand Rapids Community College, a solid
10-6 mark this season.
Jones and Klein each won their respective singles matches, each
by 6-3, 6-3 straight sets, in the third and fourth positions.
Justin Hostetter (Lincoln University, Pa./Oxford
Area) nabbed a 6-2, 6-2 triumph over Adam Sheir in fifth
singles.
Ryan Harvey (Fallston, Md./Fallston), who
continues to play strong tennis this season, collected a win over
Nathan Shertzer, 6-2, 6-0. With the win, Harvey's record,
including his singles win during the Grand Rapids CC match, now
stands at a team-best 14-3.
With their regular season now complete, the Spartans turn their
attention to the 2010 Capital Athletic Conference Tournament. The
Green and White will host a yet-to-be-determined opponent on Sunday
April 18, at 3:00 p.m.
