YORK, PA – The York College women's tennis team
posted a big 5-4 Capital Athletic Conference victory over St.
Mary's College on a beautiful Sunday afternoon in York. The
Spartans improve 7-8 overall and 4-2 in the CAC while the Seahawks
fall to 9-9 overall and 1-5 in the league.
The Spartans picked up two of the three doubles points. York was
victorious in the second and third doubles matches but both
victories came via razor thin margins.
In the second doubles match, Samantha Brenner (Mount
Airy, Md./South Carroll) and Megan McCullin (New
Windsor, Md./Westminster Senior) edged Beth Handy and
Katie Lackler 9-7. In the third doubles match, Stephanie Nelson (Marriottsville, Md./Liberty) and Maria McFaulds (North Effort, Pa./Pleasant Valley) outlasted
Maria Rau and Shelby Mullennix 9-8 and 8-6 in the tiebreaker.
The teams split the six singles matches with York earning wins
at first, third and fifth singles. Sophomore Katelyn Acker
(Narvon, Pa./Pequea Valley) rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 in the
first singles match while Brenner outlasted Lackler 3-6, 6-4, 6-0
in the exciting third singles match. Nelson rolled to 6-0, 6-3 in
the fifth singles match as the Spartans hung on for the
victory.
The Spartans return to action on Wednesday when they travel to
Lebanon Valley to face the Flying Dutchmen in the final regular
season match of the game. The contest is slated for a 3:30 pm
start.
