FREDERICK, MD – The York College women's tennis team
edged Hood College in a highly competitive Capital Athletic
Conference match on Thursday afternoon in Frederick, Md. The
Spartans improve to 4-5 overall and 2-2 in the CAC while the
Blazers fall to 0-7 overall and 0-1 in the CAC.
The match came down to the sixth singles match and Spartan
freshman Maria McFaulds (North Effort, Pa./Pleasant
Valley) responded with three-set win, outlasting Casey
Miller 6-3, 2-6, 6-2, securing the win over the Blazers.
The match kicked off with the Blazers securing two of the three
doubles matches. The Spartans' lone win came from the tandem
of McFaulds and Stephanie Nelson (Marriottsville,
Md./Liberty) as they posted an 8-4 third singles win.
The Spartans rebounded by winning four of the six singles
matches. Katelyn Acker (Narvon, Pa./Pequea Valley)
rolled to a 6-3, 6-2 first singles win. Freshman Samantha
Brenner (Mount Airy, Md./South Carroll) notched an easy
6-1, 6-1 win at third singles while Nelson also posted a solid 6-3,
6-2 win in the fifth singles match, setting the stage for
McFaulds' dramatic win.
The Spartans return to action on Sunday, March 28 when they
travel to Catholic University. The match is slated for an 11:00 am
start.
