COLLEGEVILLE,
PA – The York College men's swimming team picked up
their ninth win of the season Saturday with a 154-108 victory over
Ursinus in Collegeville, Pa. The Spartans, who won six events on
the day, now stand at 9-1 for the season while the Bears have
posted a 5-4 record.
York led off the men's portion of the
meet with a 3:45.89 triumph in the 400 medley relay. AJ
Bean (Ijamsville, Md./Urbana), Steve Tobin (Estell
Manor, N.J./Holy Spirit), Ben Hilt (Mt. Joy,
Pa./Hempfield), and Mike Murphy (Farmingdale,
N.J./Colts Neck) combined their efforts to give the
Spartans the lead-off win.
Tobin would pick up an individual victory, one
of York's five against Ursinus, in the 100 breaststroke as he
touched the wall at 1:04.73.
Will McLennan (Sparks, Md./Calvert
Hall) and Jack Gottschalk (Forest Hill,
Md./Fallston) garnered their own victories in the 50 and
100 freestyle races, respectively. McLennan's 22.99 gave the
Spartans first-place points in the 50 before Gottschalk clocked in
at 50.56 to take the 100. Gottschalk's time was only a mere
two-hundredths of a second off of his top 100 pace of the season.
Murphy would finish second in the 100 at Ursinus, touching in a
mere three-hundredths behind Gottschalk.
In the 200 breaststroke, Steve Yeager
(Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) and Steve Mercer
(Rockville, Md./The Heights School) finished 1-2, giving
the Green and White 13 points. Yeager's 2:21.03 proved the
Spartans' second-best time of the season, behind only his own
2:18.74 set back on November 6, 2009. Mercer tallied a 2:23.71,
shattering his previous best this season by over a second and a
half.
Mercer would go on to capture the victory in
the 200 IM, besting the rest of the field with a 2:06.46. That time
proved to be York's third-best 200 IM time of the 2009-10
season as well as Mercer's second-fastest mark.
Andrew Demarest (Galloway, N.J./Abesegami) took
the runner-up spot in the event with a 2:09.77.
Prior to Mercer's victory in the 200 IM,
fellow rookie Andy Woods (York, Pa./Dover Area)
garnered a 56.28 triumph in the 100 butterfly – his
second-best mark of the year.
Aside from their six victories, the Spartans
also picked up a total of ten runner-up spots. Yeager's
10:51.54 in the 1,000 freestyle, York's third-fastest time
this season, equaled second-place points for the Spartans.
Murphy collected a second-place finish in the
200 freestyle (1:52.42) as he touched the wall just before
Alex Diehl (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts)
clocked in at 1:52.45.
Before his 100 butterfly win, Woods took
second in the 100 backstroke tallying a 58.22. Senior Clark
Arnold (York, Pa./Northeastern) grabbed a second-place
finish of his own in the 200 butterfly as he touched in at 2:10.01.
Bean took second in a pair of events. The
junior posted a 2:02.01 in the 200 backstroke, both his and
York's second-best time of the year. Later, Bean registered a
5:15.44 in the 500 freestyle.
The Spartan 400 freestyle relay team of Hilt,
McLennan, Gottschalk, and Murphy, turned in York's final
second-place mark. The crew managed a 3:26.10 in
the final race of the day.
York is back in action on Saturday, January
23, as they return the Grumbacher Sport & Fitness Center to
celebrate “Senior Day.” The Spartans host Frostburg
University next Saturday in a 1:00 p.m. dual meet.
