YORK, PA – The York College women's swimming team
returned to the pool in triumphant fashion Friday evening besting
visiting College of Notre Dame (Md.) by a 138-39 result. The
victory improves the Spartan record to 7-4 overall for the
season.
After not competing in a meet for over a month, focusing squarely
on training during the semester break, the Green and White nabbed
eight victories in their first outing of 2010, including both relay
events. With a shortened College of Notre Dame squad, the Spartans
were able to move swimmers around in the lineup providing time in
different events for various student-athletes.
York led off the meet against the Gators with a 2:00.01 win in the
200 medley relay. Molly Wasik (York, Pa./Spring
Grove), Flor Aroche (Spring,
Texas/Tomball), Liz Grey (Bensalem, Pa./Nazareth
Academy), and Ashley Stanton (Columbia,
Md./Hammond) combined to open the new year in the win
column for the Green and White.
In the 200 freestyle, Michaela Guild (Laurel, Md./St.
Vincent Pallotti) collected the victory, touching the wall
at 2:06.41 – York's fifth-best time this season in the
event.
Later, freshman Kathy Murphy (Farmingdale, N.J./Colts
Neck) took the 200 IM with a time of 2:33.01 before Grey
secured the 50 butterfly with a solid 28.79.
Heather MacLennan (Galena, Md./St. Mark's),
despite the intense winter training period, posted a strong 56.77
in the 100 freestyle. That time proved to be York's
second-best in the event for the 2009-10 campaign, just 1.11 off
MacLennan's own 55.66.
The Spartans then garnered a pair of short 50-yard races, taking
both the 50 backstroke and the 50 breaststroke. Wasik's 30.49
in the backstroke secured first-place points while Aroche took the
win in the breaststroke with a 34.25.
York would finish the meet with a 200 freestyle relay triumph.
Stanton, Guild, Grey, and MacLennan combined for a 1:47.65 to take
first in the evening's final event.
In addition to installing the trio of 50-yard races to
tonight's program, the Green and White also swam the 1650
freestyle for the first time this season. Freshman Meg
Dailey (New Windsor, N.Y./Cornwall Central) provided the
Spartans with their best finish in the race, taking second with a
21:26.86.
York would secure second in all ten races, including
Dailey's in the 1650. Alison Beverly (Andover,
N.J./Newton) took the runner-up spot in the 200 free
(2:15.44) before Kate Estes (Athens, Pa./Athens
Area) nabbed second in the 50 freestyle (27.37). Estes
would later take second again in the 100 free with a time of 59.10
– just sixth-hundredths of a second off her best 100 time of
this season.
Kaitlin Crean (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Warde)
backed up Murphy's time in the 200 IM with a 2:34.96 while
Amanda Silcox (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) posted a
29.55 in the 50 butterfly. Silcox would go on to take a pair of
second-place finishes as she also nabbed the runner-up position in
the 50 backstroke (31.29).
Alex Minsky (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North)
provided York with additional second-place points in the 50
breaststroke by turning in a 35.14.
Both of the Spartan relay squads secured second in their
respective races. Murphy, Minsky, MacLennan, and Guild posted a
2:01.80 in the 200 medley before Estes, Lisa King (Bel Air,
Md./C. Milton Wright), Bethany Moore (Fort Meade,
Md./Meade Senior), and Wasik registered a 1:49.85 in the
200 free relay.
As has been common throughout this season, the Green and White
have a quick turnaround. The Spartans return to action tomorrow,
Saturday, January 16, as they head to Collegeville, Pa. where York
will take on Ursinus in a 1:00 p.m. dual meet.
