SALISBURY, MD – The 2009 York College
women's tennis season came to a close Tuesday afternoon as
the Spartans fell to Salisbury 8-1 in the semifinal round of the
Capital Athletic Conference tournament. The Green and White end the
year with a 5-11 mark while the Sea Gulls (14-4) move on to face
Mary Washington for the CAC Championship.
The lone Spartan victory came from
freshman Samantha Brenner (Mount Airy, Md./South
Carroll) in the sixth singles slot. Brenner outlasted
Lauren Bakker in a lengthy three set match. The rookie took the
first set 6-3 before falling in the second 3-6. Brenner, who has
now won five straight, then secured the victory with a 13-11
third-set triumph.
The top five singles slots belonged
to the Sea Gulls as they took each match in straight sets.
Prior to the singles matches,
Salisbury swept each of the three doubles contests. Megan
Logan (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) and
Stephanie Nelson (Marriottsville, Md./Liberty)
provided the stiffest test for the Sea Gulls in third doubles, but
still fell by an 8-4 count.
With the defeat the Spartan bid
adieu to seniors Logan, Heidi Acker (Narvon, Pa./Pequea
Valley), and Keturah Buchanan (York, Pa./William
Penn). This trio of seniors has helped to lay a strong
foundation for the future of the Spartan women's tennis
program.
