HILTON HEAD, SC – The York College
women's tennis team picked up their first win of the season
last Tuesday courtesy of a 6-3 victory over Catholic in Hilton
Head, S.C. The Spartans then fell by the same 6-3 count to Kutztown
in Wednesday's non-conference action. The split moves the
Spartans' early season record to 1-3 while the Cardinals fall
to 3-2 and the Golden Bears up their mark to 1-3.
The Green and White took four singles matches
and two doubles contests from Catholic to capture their opening
victory of the season. Paige Doutrich (Gap, Pa./Pequea
Valley) captured the #2 slot with a 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) win
over Caitlin Dunn.
Heidi Acker (Narvon, Pa./Pequea
Valley) secured the #4 spot for the Green and White by
comfortable 6-0, 6-1 scores. Megan Logan (West Chester,
Pa./West Chester East) and Stephanie Nelson
(Marriottsville, Md./Liberty) also posted decisive scores
in their fifth and sixth position matches respectively. Logan did
not drop a game to Sarah Luffy as she won 6-0, 6-0. Nelson bested
Allison Tontz 6-2, 6-2 in #6 singles.
In doubles action, Acker and senior Keturah
Buchanan (York, Pa./William Penn) teamed up in the second position
to procure an 8-2 result for the Spartans. Third doubles belonged
to Nelson and Caralyn Caruso (Chesterfield, N.J./Northern
Burlington County) as the pair combined for an 8-3
victory.
The match with the Golden Bears did not prove
as kind to the Spartans, with York falling 6-3 to Kutztown. Logan
once again nabbed the #5 singles match for the Green and White
winning in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0. Nelson won her third straight
match of the season with an 8-7 (8-6) result over Shir Suez. The
sophomore now owns a flawless 3-0 record for the year.
Nelson continued her dominance in doubles,
pairing again with Caruso to grab an 8-4 victory in the third
slot.
The Spartans complete their winter break trip
to Hilton Head on Thursday, March 5, with a match against
Mercyhurst. York squares off with the Lakers at 6:00 pm.
