GRANTHAM, PA – The York College
men's tennis team captured an 8-1 victory Monday evening over
Messiah. The non-conference road win, which snaps the
Spartans' two-match skid, improves the Green and
White's 2009 record to 5-7 while the Falcons fall to 3-6.
York swept through the singles
contests gaining all six points. Tim Mowrer (Gordonville,
Pa./Pequea Valley) secured the #1 spot for the Spartans
courtesy of a 7-5, 6-4 win over Messiah's Jansen Hein.
Joel Trimmer (Hanover,
Pa./Hanover), playing in the #2 position for the first
time this season, came back from a first set loss to take the match
4-6, 6-4, 6-4.
In third singles, junior
Paul Graci (Exton, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) captured a
more comfortable 6-0, 6-2 victory while Steve Collison
(Westville, N.J./Woodbury) put up the win at fourth
singles with a 6-3, 6-2 triumph.
Jeff Mansfield
(Bartonsville, Pa./North Harford) grabbed the victory in
the #5 spot, taking the team point in three sets. After a first set
6-1 win, Messiah's Andrew Wismer battled back to take the
second set 6-3. Mansfield then finished the match in similar
fashion to how it started with another 6-1 victory.
Travis Klein (East
Stroudsburg, Pa./Pocono Mountain East) continued his
exceptional 2009 campaign with another sixth slot victory on
Monday. The 6-2, 6-3 result pushes the sophomore's record to
a stellar 8-3 for the season as he owns the Spartans' top
winning percentage this season.
In doubles action, Mowrer and
Colin Jones (Felton, Pa./Red Lion) captured the
second position point with an 8-2 win. Graci and Collison teamed up
at #3 taking that match 8-0.
The Spartans return to action on
Thursday, April 3, as they travel to Baltimore to take on Goucher.
The non-conference contest is slated for 3:00 pm.
