HILTON HEAD, SC - The York College women's
tennis team came out on the short end of their first two matches of
the 2009 season with a 7-0 loss to Meredith and a 7-2 defeat at the
hands of Methodist. The Spartans open the year at 0-2 while
Meredith, who is ranked #13 in the Atlantic South Region, improves
to 3-0 and Methodist ups their early season mark to 3-1.
The Green and White officially began their 2009 slate this past
Sunday against Meredith in Hilton Head, S.C. The weather conspired
against both squads forcing them to play pro sets and cut out the
#4 and #6 singles matches. Katelyn Acker (Narvon,
Pa./Pequea Valley) and Paige Doutrich (Gap,
Pa./Pequea Valley), York's #1 and #2 players, stretched
their opening contests but unfortunately fell by identical 8-6
score lines.
In doubles, Heidi Acker (Narvon, Pa./Pequea
Valley) and Keturah Buchanan (York, Pa./William
Penn) teamed up in #2 doubles as they nearly bested
Meredith's Brooke Baird and Ashley Pearsall. However, once again
the Green and White came out on the short end of an 8-6 result as
Meredith swept each match.
York faired better in Monday's date with Methodist, yet still
fell 7-2. Megan Logan (West Chester, Pa./West Chester
East) rallied back from being down a set in her #5 singles
contest to take the match in a third set tie-breaker 1-6, 6-4,
10-7. Sophomore Stephanie Nelson (Marriottsville,
Md./Liberty) provided the Spartans second win of the day
with an 8-3 pro set victory at #6 singles.
The Spartans continue their winter break trip in Hilton Head
with two more matches. York squares off with Catholic at 12:30 on
Tuesday, March 3, before concluding their trip against Kutztown on
Wednesday, March 4, at noon.
