YORK,
PA – The York College women's swimming team collected
two victories Friday evening, defeating visiting Goucher 162-42 and
Capital Athletic Conference foe Salisbury by a tight 114-91 result.
York's triumph over Salisbury marks their first win against
the Sea Gulls since January 25, 2003 when the Green and White won
107-98 in another close contest.
Heading into the women's final event,
the 200 freestyle relay, the Spartans needed to take both second-
and third-place in order to capture the victory over Salisbury. The
motivated Spartans put together an outstanding race, compiling a
1:45.88 to take first in the relay – giving the Green and
White the team victory. Senior Ashley Stanton (Columbia,
Md./Hammond) put the Spartans in the lead early with a
strong lead-off leg, while Liz Grey (Bensalem, Pa./Nazareth
Academy) and Chelsea Ross (Paoli, Pa./PA
Cyber) kept the Green and White in the ahead despite an
exhaustive Salisbury charge. Sophomore standout Michaela
Guild (Laurel, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) effectively
slammed the door on any hopes of a Sea Gull comeback as she touched
the wall over a full second before Salisbury's Katy Turner.
Ross not only helped the Spartans to the 200
free relay win, but she also collected two individual victories.
The rookie won both the individual 200 freestyle, coming in at
2:02.57, and the 100 freestyle, with a 56.85. Ross won both races
despite not swimming in either event during York's first
three meets this season.
Fellow newcomer Heather MacLennan
(Galena, Md./St. Mark's) also secured first-place points
for the Spartans in a pair of individual events. The sophomore
transfer nabbed first in the 50 freestyle with a swift 25.52, her
best meet time this season. Later in the evening, MacLennan took
another first in the 100 backstroke with a brisk 1:02.26. That time
marks another season-best as she lowered her previous 2009-2010 top
time by 85 hundredths-of-a-second.
Senior Molly Wasik (York, Pa./Spring
Grove) provided the Green and White with the 200 IM
individual triumph. Wasik's 2:20.47 was by far her best time
of the year, as the senior has slashed nearly five full seconds
since her first 2:25.43 result in York's November 6 meet
against Mary Washington and Hood.
Additionally, the Spartans grabbed six
valuable second-place finishes, including second in the 200 medley
relay. MacLennan, Alex Minsky (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock
North), Amanda Silcox (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar
Crest) and Grey combined for a 1:57.41 as York's top
squad.
Following the opening relay, Guild secured
second in the 1,000 free with an 11:42.13, while Kaitlin
Crean (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Warde) and
Alison Beverly (Andover, N.J./Newton) took third
and fourth, respectively. Crean touched in at 11:45.79 as Beverly
notched an 11:48.46.
Stanton collected a pair of seconds as she
notched runner-up points in the 100 and 200 freestyle events.
Stanton's 58.08 in the 100 and 2:04.48 in the 200
significantly aided the Spartan effort.
Kathy Murphy (Farmingdale, N.J./Colts
Neck) took second in the 100 backstroke (1:04.72) while
Minsky's 1:14.44 provided second for the rookie Spartan in
the 100 breaststroke.
Guild (5:42.03) and Crean (5:49.18) took third
and fourth respectively in the 500 freestyle.
The Spartans return to action on Saturday,
December 5, with a trip to Millersvile University for a 1:00 p.m.
match. York then hits the pool next week with another set
back-to-back meets scheduled for Friday and Saturday. On Friday,
December 11, the Green and White host nearby Elizabethtown College
in a 6:00 p.m. tilt before facing both Gallaudet and Penn-State
Altoona on Saturday, December 12, in a 1:00 p.m. tri-meet.
