YORK,
PA - The York College men's swimming team posted a seven
overall individual wins Friday evening at the Spartans'
Grumbacher Sport & Fitness Center. Those seven victories
provided the Green and White with a 159-46 triumph over Capital
Athletic Conference foe Salisbury and a 141-61 besting of former
league squad Goucher.
York's 200 freestyle relay team
highlighted Friday's meet by closing it out with a new pool
record. Tom DeCoursey (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill
West), Jack Gottschalk (Forest Hill,
Md./Fallston), Will McLennan (Sparks, Md./Calvert
Hall), and Ben Hilt (Mt. Joy,
Pa./Hempfield) combined for a pool-best 1:29.41, breaking
the previous mark of 1:29.72 established in 2007.
Before their respective performances in the
200 free relay, Gottschalk and Hilt each nabbed individual wins.
Gottschalk captured the 1,000 freestyle, his second victory in as
many tries this season, turning in a 10:46.50 to outpace the field
by just over 12 seconds.
Hilt's win came in the 50 freestyle as
he traversed his lane in a mere 22.53. The junior posted his best
time of the 2009-2010 campaign, improving on this year's
previous best by two-tenths of a second.
Andrew Demarest's (Galloway,
N.J./Abesegami) 2:06.00 in the 200 IM provided the Spartan
senior with first-place points and York's third win in the
first five events.
Classmate Clark Arnold (York,
Pa./Northeastern) made it four wins in six events as he
backed-up Demarest's victory with one of his own in the 100
butterfly. Arnold secured the win with a 55.69 in the event, his
second 100 butterfly triumph this year.
York's outstanding senior class made it
three straight victories as senior Mike Murphy
(Farmingdale, N.J./Colts Neck) collected the Spartan
victory in the 100 freestyle. One of the CAC's best in the
100 free, Murphy touched in at 49.96 to record his second-best time
this season.
Steven Tobin (Estell Manor, N.J./Holy
Spirit) picked up York's final individual win,
grabbing first-place points with a 1:03.88 in the 100 breaststroke.
That time ties his best mark of the season.
The Green and White also recorded six overall
second-place finishes, including both relay events. The 200 medley
squad of AJ Bean (Ijamsville, Md./Urbana), Tobin,
Arnold, and Gottschalk clocked in at 1:41.16 while the 200 free
team of Brian Shaffer (Schnecksville,
Pa./Parkland), Tyler Ziegler (Coatesville,
Pa./Coatesville Area Senior), Andy Woods (York,
Pa./Dover Area), and Demarest notched a 1:32.69.
Bean also took an individual second in the 100
backstroke with a 56.63.
Junior Steve Yeager (Sinking Spring,
Pa./Wilson) grabbed second-place points in the 200
freestyle (1:51.77) as did freshman Steve Mercer
(Rockville, Md./The Heights School) in the 100
breaststroke (1:04.74).
In the 500 free, sophomore Richard
Janosky (Dover, Pa./Dover) tabbed a 5:18.41 for second
while Murphy followed just behind with a 5:18.90. Janosky also took
third in the 100 butterfly (57.30) while Matt Kempel
(Millington, Md./Queen Anne's County) took third in the
1,000 freestyle (11:11.68).
The Spartans return to action next week with a
busy back-to-back schedule. On Friday, December 11, the Green and
White host Elizabethtown in a 6:00 p.m. tilt. York then has a quick
turnaround as they welcome CAC foe Gallaudet and Penn-State Altoona
on Saturday, December 12, in a 1:00 p.m. tri-meet.
