YORK,
PA – Twelve event wins, including ten individual triumphs,
led the York College women's swimming squad to a 180-80
victory over Elizabethtown College Friday evening from York's
Grumbacher Sport & Fitness Center. The Green and White swing
their 2009-2010 mark back to .500 at 4-4 while the Blue Jays suffer
just their second loss of the season as they are now 5-2.
Two Spartans won multiple individual events on
the evening as senior Molly Wasik (York, Pa./Spring
Grove) and freshman Alex Minsky (Newtown,
Pa./Council Rock North) each nabbed two races for the
Spartan side. Wasik took both the 100 backstroke (1:05.26) and 200
backstroke (2:19.28) events.
Minsky, who is off to a spectacular start to
her collegiate career, recorded her first-place finishes in the 100
and 200 breaststroke races. The rookie Spartan clocked in at
1:15.00 and 2:42.79, respectively.
The 500 freestyle event, perhaps the
contest's most competitive race, belonged to Chelsea
Ross (Paoli, Pa./PA Cyber). Another one of the
Spartans' exceptionally talented freshmen, Ross edged out
Elizabethtown's Lindsay Riley by a miniscule .03, registering
a 5:42.39 for the tight victory.
York led off the night in fine fashion, as the
400-medley relay team of Heather MacLennan (Galena, Md./St.
Mark's), Minsky, Liz Grey (Bensalem,
Pa./Nazareth Academy), and Ross cruised to the
meet-opening victory, swimming to a 4:19.34.
Following the 400-medley squad, sophomore
standout Michaela Guild (Laurel, Md./St. Vincent
Pallotti) made it back-to-back triumphs for the Green and
White as she recorded an 11:29.67 in the 1,000 free to secure
first-place points for the Spartans.
In the 200 butterfly, Lisa King (Bel
Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) grabbed the win with a 2:24.56,
outpacing rookie teammate Katelyn Romm's (Chester,
Md./Kent Island) 2:45.22.
MacLennan and Guild went 1-2 in the 100
freestyle as MacLennan timed in at 56.21 while Guild took a 58.21.
Grey, one of York's quality
sophomore-class members, recorded first in the 100 butterfly
(1:04.37) while Amanda Silcox (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar
Crest) came in second with a 1:05.02. Silcox also finished
second in the 200 backstroke, cutting over eight seconds from her
seed time with a 2:25.08.
Shaving well over two seconds off her seed
time, Alison Beverly (Andover, N.J./Newton)
captured the 400 IM triumph. The junior covered the race's
four legs in 5:05.01 to take the win.
Fellow junior Flor Isabel Aroche
(Spring, Texas/Tomball) nabbed a pair of second-place
finishes for the Green and White. Aroche garnered the runner-up
spot in the 100 breaststroke (1:17.33) and the 200 breaststroke
(2:48.24) events while cutting over 2.5 seconds from her 200 seed
time.
Senior Ashley Stanton (Columbia,
Md./Hammond) took second in the 50 free with a 26.70.
York completed the bookends with a commanding
victory in the 400 freestyle relay. Stanton, Grey, Ross, and
MacLennan combined for a 3:51.72, outpacing teammates Kate
Estes (Athens, Pa./Athens Area), Bethany Moore
(Fort Meade, Md./Meade Senior), Wasik, and Guild who
finished with a 3:57.60.
The Spartans will have little time to revel in
Friday's victory, as the Green and White return to action on
Saturday, December 12. York hosts Penn State-Altoona and Capital
Athletic Conference foe Gallaudet in a 1:00 p.m. double-dual meet.
