YORK,
PA – The York College men's swimming team picked up
their sixth victory of the year Friday evening as they ran away
with a 185-36 result over visiting Elizabethtown College. The
Spartans, who now stand at 6-1 on the season, recorded the top two
times in each race to down the Blue Jays (3-4).
Junior AJ Bean (Ijamsville,
Md./Urbana) highlighted the Spartan efforts by
establishing a new pool record in the 200 backstroke. Bean swam to
a record-setting 2:01.08, topping the 2007 mark of since-graduated
Steve Fulcher by 0.11, as he also shaved nearly two seconds off his
seed time.
Jamie Hicks (Kingsville,
Md./Fallston) cut his seed time by over two seconds in the
500 freestyle event, while also winning the race by clocking in
with a solid 5:18.06.
In keeping with the seed-time cuts,
Ben Hilt (Mt. Joy, Pa./Hempfield) topped the field
in the 100 butterfly with a 54.46, dropping over a full second.
Despite going off as exhibition, Steve
Mercer (Rockville, Md./The Heights School) slashed nearly
seven seconds off his 400 IM seed time, coming in on Friday with a
4:28.79. Sophomore Jack Gottschalk (Forest Hill,
Md./Fallston) also dropped time in the event, over two
seconds, with a 4:29.20.
The Green and White spread the wealth Friday
evening, as no Spartan won more than one individual race.
Matt Kempel (Millington, Md./Queen
Anne's County) secured the 1,000 free with an
11:07.29, while Alex Diehl (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J.
Roberts) notched a 1:52.81 for his win in the 200
freestyle.
Andy Woods (York, Pa./Dover
Area) took the 100 backstroke with a 58.27, edging Hilt by
less than two-tenths of a second.
Tyler Ziegler (Coatesville,
Pa./Coatesville Area Senior) touched in a 1:07.05 in the
100 breaststroke topping teammate Adam Willier's
(Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville Area) 1:07.28.
The 200 butterfly belonged to senior
Andrew Demarest's (Galloway, N.J./Abesegami)
2:07.59 while classmate Clark Arnold (York,
Pa./Northeastern) chimed in with a 2:09.08 for second.
In the 50 free, junior Tom DeCoursey
(Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) hammered out the win
with a 22.75, touching just before Will McLennan's
(Sparks, Md./Calvert Hall) 22.87.
Richard Janosky (Dover,
Pa./Dover) and Steve Yeager (Sinking Spring,
Pa./Wilson) also picked up victories for the Spartans in
their respective events. Janosky placed first in the 100 free with
a 50.91 while Yeager nabbed the top spot in the 200 breaststroke
with a 2:19.58.
Justin Murphy (Mechanicsville,
Va./Lee-Davis) secured a pair of second-place finishes for
the Spartans as he manned the runner-up spot in the 1,000 free
(11:25.21) and the 200 backstroke (2:12.67). Brian Shaffer
(Schnecksville, Pa./Parkland) took second in the 200
freestyle, clocking in at 1:54.00.
The Green and White also swam to top times in
both the 400 medley relay (3:45.43) and the 400 freestyle relay
(3:23.49).
The Spartans must rest-up quickly as they
return to action on Saturday, December 12, in a 1:00 p.m.
double-dual meet. The Green and White welcome Penn State-Altoona
and Capital Athletic Conference foe Gallaudet to the Grumbacher for
the three-team contest.
