YORK, PA- The York College men's tennis team dropped an
8-1 Capital Athletic Conference decision to #12 Salisbury
University on Wednesday in York. The Sea Gulls improve to 14-1
overall and 6-0 in the CAC as they have clinched the regular
season championship. The Spartans fall to 11-3 overall and 2-2 in
the conference.
The Sea Gulls captured all three doubles matches but two of the
three were close matches. Senior
Ron Ho (Frederick,
Md./Frederick) and junior
Ryan Fickes (York,
Pa./Dallastown) dropped an 8-5 decision in the first
doubles match. The Spartans led in the match only to see the Sea
Gull duo of Scott Burtzlaff and Brendan Kincaid come back to post
the win.
Tim Mowrer (Gordonville, Pa./Pequea
Valley) and
Joel Trimmer (Hanover,
Pa./Hanover) lost to Evan Thomas and Matt Nicholson
in the second doubles by a count of 8-6. The Sea Gulls won
the third doubles 8-3.
The singles featured the Spartan highlight for the day as Mowrer
defeated Kincaid 6-4, 6-4 in the first singles match. Kincaid
entered the match undefeated in the CAC with a perfect 5-0
record. Kincaid entered the match 16-2 overall for 2007-08 and
defeated Mowrer 6-1, 6-0 in the CAC tournament last April 19.
Mowrer improves to 12-2 overall and 3-1 in the CAC. On Saturday,
Kincaid had defeated Mary Washington's Randy Loden who is
ranked fifth in the nation and tops in the region.
Spartan head coach
Mark Ludwig was pleased to see
Mowrer break through against a regionally ranked player.
“Tim played great today,” says Ludwig.
“It's not very often Tim shows emotion on the court but
he was especially focused during this match. Brendan Kincaid is an
outstanding player and it is a credit to Tim that he was able to
post the victory. This is the biggest individual win we have had
since I have been the head coach.”
The Sea Gulls captured the remaining singles matches, all in
straight sets. The Spartans were in several of the singles matches
but the nationally ranked Gulls got the key points to post
victories.
The Spartans return to action on Thursday afternoon as they travel
to Hood for a CAC match. The match is slated to begin at 3:00
pm.
