YORK, PA - The York College men's tennis team
picked up their ninth win of the 2008 campaign grabbing a 7-2
non-conference victory over Messiah College Wednesday evening in
York. The Spartans improve to 9-2 on the season while Messiah drops
to 0-1.
Tim Mowrer (Gordonville, Pa./Pequea Valley)
earned his ninth victory of the year in first doubles, defeating
Nate Ipsen 6-4, 7-6 (7-1). Mowrer has manned the number one slot
for the Spartans all season playing to a superb 9-2 mark.
Paul Graci (Exton, Pa./Bishop Shanahan)
continues his strong season as the Spartans' main second
singles player. The sophomore earned the hard-fought victory 7-6
(8-6), 2-6, 10-2 to move his overall individual record to 10-1.
In his first appearance as York's choice at third singles,
Joel Trimmer (Hanover, Pa./Hanover) did not
disappoint notching the straight set victory 6-2, 6-3 and is now
8-2 on the season
Messiah's Sam Shorts claimed fourth singles but
York's Josh Kulp (Souderton,
Pa./Homeschooled) and Steve Collison (Westville,
N.J./Woodbury) easily handled the fifth and sixth slots
respectively. Kulp took his match 6-2, 6-1 as his record now stands
at 3-1. Collison also won in straight sets 6-1, 6-2 and improves to
a sparkling 9-0 on the season.
Aside from taking five of the six singles matches, the Spartans
also won two of the three doubles contests. Messiah won first
doubles with an 8-5 victory while York would garner the second and
third slots. Mowrer and Trimmer earned the second doubles victory
8-2 as the pair improves to 9-1 on the season. The duo of Kulp and
Braxton Koppelman (Alexandria, Va./Annandale) won
8-1 in third doubles as they have posted a strong 8-1 mark when
teamed together.
The Spartans hit the court once again this Saturday as they take
on St. Mary's in a 1:00 pm Capital Athletic Conference tilt.
