YORK, PA - The York College women's tennis team posted
their second straight win as the green and white notched a 5-4 win
over Villa Julie College in the Capital Athletic Conference opener
for both teams. York improves to 2-3 overall while the Mustangs
fall to 0-6 and 0-1 in the conference.
The Mustangs took two of three doubles matches to forge the
early lead. Villa Julie's Sarah Searing and Samantha Rasnake
edged York's Heidi Acker (Narvon, Pa./Pequea Valley) and
Katie Muir 9-8 (7-5 in the tiebreaker) in the first doubles match.
The Mustangs' Becky Matlack and Barbora Hnizda downed the
Spartans' Stephanie Nelson (Marriottsville, Md./Liberty) 9-7
in the second doubles match. York's Keturah Buchanan (York,
Pa./William Penn) and Megan Logan (West Chester, Pa./West Chester
East) combined to roll to an 8-0 win in third doubles, salvaging
one point for York.
In singles play, Buchanan got the green and white rolling with a
6-0, 6-4 win in the first singles match. Matlack posted a 6-2, 6-4
victory in the second singles match for the Mustangs. Logan notched
a 6-1, 6-0 victory in the third singles match, tying the overall
match at three wins each. Searing outlasted York's Doutrich
5-7, 7-6 (8-6), 10-6 in the fourth singles match, giving the
Mustangs an overall lead. York's Heidi Acker (Narvon,
Pa./Pequea Valley) remained unbeaten with a 6-2, 6-1 win at fifth
singles. Acker is now 5-0 for the campaign for the Spartans. Nelson
concluded the match with a 6-1, 6-1 victory in sixth singles as the
Spartans outlasted the Mustangs.
York returns to action on Friday afternoon as they host
Salisbury University in a CAC contest. The match is slated to
begin at 3:00 pm at the Spartan Tennis Center.
