YORK, PA- The York College men's tennis team extended
their win streak to six with a 7-2 non-conference victory over
Gettysburg College on a crisp Tuesday afternoon in York. The
Spartans improve to 6-1 overall while the Bullets fall to 1-2 for
the campaign.
The match kicked off with a trio of competitive doubles matches.
The Spartan duo of Tim Mowrer (Gordonville, Pa./Pequea Valley) and
Joel Trimmer (Hanover, Pa./Hanover) put the Spartans up early with
an 8-4 second doubles victory. York's Josh Kulp (Souderton,
Pa./Homeschooled) and Braxton Koppelman (Alexandria, Va./Annandale)
combined to post an 8-5 win in the third doubles match as York took
the 2-0 lead. The Bullets salvaged the first doubles match as Dale
Beshore and Kyle Naylor downed the York duo of Ron Ho (Frederick,
Md./Frederick) and Ryan Fickes (Dallastown, Pa./Dallastown), 8-6,
in an exciting match.
In singles play, Mowrer captured the first singles match as he
downed Beshore 6-2 and 6-1. Sophomore Paul Graci (Exton, Pa./Bishop
Shanahan) extended the York lead with a 6-3, 6-2 win over the
Bullets' Mike Leary in the third singles match. Kulp
continued to build in the Spartan advantage with a 7-5, 6-1 win at
sixth singles as York led 5-1. Fickes posted a 6-3, 6-1 win over
Derin Wilson in the second singles match before Trimmer captured
the final Spartan win with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Patrick Dempsey
in the fourth singles match-up. Gettysburg's Kevin Raynes
closed out the match with a 7-5, 1-6, 6-1 win over Ho in the fifth
singles match, providing for the final score.
The Spartans return to action on Thursday when they
host Villa Julie College in the Spartans' 2008 Capital
Athletic Conference opener. The match is slated to begin at
3:30 pm in York.
