YORK, PA – The York College men's
swimming team picked up a pair of decisive victories Saturday
afternoon, 167-37 over Gallaudet and 145.5-55.5 over PSU-Altoona,
in tri-meet action from York's Grumbacher Sport & Fitness
Center. The Spartans improve to a solid 5-1 on the season and 3-1
in conference action.
Seven Spartans grabbed individual
victories on the afternoon, while picking up seven more second
place spots.
York jumped out to a fast lead, taking
first in each of the first four races. After taking the top two
places in the 200 medley relay to open the men's portion of
the tri-meet, sophomore Steve Yeager (Sinking Spring,
Pa./Wilson) began the individual scoring with a win in the
1,000 freestyle. Yeager won the race by clocking in at 10:32.20.
Teammate Alex Diehl (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J.
Roberts) took second in the event with an 11:04.44.
Brian Shaffer (Schnecksville,
Pa./Parkland) captured York's third victory with a
win in the 200 freestyle, touching the wall at 1:51.67.
In the 50 freestyle, sophomore
Ben Hilt (Mt. Joy, Pa./Hempfield) stretched the
Spartan streak to four straight wins, covering his lane in 22.42.
Freshman Richard Janosky (Dover, Pa./Dover)
finished just behind Hilt as he turned in a second-place
performance with a time of 23.35.
Spartan sophomore AJ Bean
(Ijamsville, Md./Urbana) added first-place points to the
scoreboard when he won the 100 butterfly in a time of 56.96. Junior
Dan Kresser (Washington, N.J./Warren Hills
Regional) took second in the race by clocking a 58.12.
A pair of rookies nabbed first and second
in the 100 freestyle as Jonathan Gottschalk (Forest Hill,
Md./Fallston) and Diehl went 1-2 in the race. Gottschalk
recorded the top time of 49.40 coming in just ahead of
Diehl's 51.44.
Junior Andrew Demarest (Galloway,
N.J./Abesegami), who came in second in the 200 IM, posted
a first-place finish in the 100 back. His time of 1:00.46 tied him
with Altoona's Dan Palermo for first in the event.
Garrett Higgins (Yardley,
Pa./Pennsbury) grabbed York's seventh and final
individual victory when he secured the 500 freestyle for the green
and white clocking in at 5:10.14. Matt Jennings (Fairfax,
Va./Robinson) finished just behind Higgins to capture
second in the event with a 5:12.58.
Steven Tobin (Estell Manor, N.J./Holy
Spirit) was the Spartans' top finisher in the 100
breaststroke. The sophomore took second in the event, clocking in
at 1:04.10.
In similar fashion to how the meet began,
the Spartans took the two spots in the 200 freestyle relay.
Shaffer, Gottschalk, Hilt, and Jennings teamed up for a first-place
finish with a time of 1:30.53. Janosky, Clark Arnold (York,
Pa./Northeastern), Tom DeCoursey (Cherry Hill,
N.J./Cherry Hill West), and Higgins secured second for the
Spartans traversing their lane in 1:32.24.
The Spartans now turn their collective
attention to Saturday, November 22, when the green and white host
Capital Athletic Conference foe St. Mary's (Md.). The league
tilt is slated for 1:00 pm.
