YORK, PA - Senior captain Kali
Macgregor (Rockville, Md/Academy of the Holy Cross)
propelled the York College women's soccer team to a 2-1
victory over University of Mary Washington in the first round of
the Capital Athletic Conference tournament Saturday afternoon. With
the victory the Spartans improve to 11-6-1 while the Eagles fall to
8-6-5.
With the match tied at one and seemingly
destined for overtime, sophomore Ali Jones (Riva,
Md/Archbishop Spalding) fired off a shot which deflected
off an Eagle defender for a corner kick.
On the ensuing corner, senior defender
Caitlin Allen (Langhorne, Pa/Council Rock South)
served in a perfect ball which Macgregor timely headed into the
back of the net to give the Spartans their first lead of the match
and the game-winner.
The Spartans fell behind early as the Eagles were able to find the
net just a mere 11 minutes into the contest. The Eagles were
awarded a corner kick where they played a short ball to Lauren
Harkness. The Eagle defender promptly played the ball to the far
post where Kate Parvin was able to head the ball over the
outstretched arms of freshman goalkeeper Sarah Spanarkel.

The score would remain in favor of the visitors
for the rest of the half as both teams created scoring
opportunities but no one was able to find the back of the net. York
held an advantage in shots 5-4 while Mary Washington held a corner
kick advantage of 2-1.
The Spartans came out energized in the second
half creating great opportunities early in the second half. Just
five minutes into the period sophomore Steph Mergler
(Street, Md/North Hartford) tallied the equalizer after
she collected a ball at the top of the 18-yard box, made a move
left creating separation and fired a shot inside the far post.
The Spartans and Eagles would continue to
create chances for the remainder of the game, with Macgregor
notching the game-winner.
Spanarkel records her second victory of the
season, recording one save. Laura McCarthy takes the loss for the
Eagles registering five saves in 90 minutes of action.
The Spartans will head to Salisbury, Md. this
Tuesday to take on the Sea Gulls of Salisbury University in the CAC
semi-finals. Game time has yet to be determined, please check
