YORK, PA – The York College men's
swimming team picked up their first win in their first meet of the
2008-2009 season with a convincing 163-33 victory over visiting
Hood College in Capital Athletic Conference action Saturday
afternoon. The Spartans, who took ten of eleven first-place spots
at the York College Natatorium, begin the year 1-0 with the CAC win
while the Blazers start 0-1.
Freshman
Jonathan Gottschalk (Forest Hill, Md./Fallston)
made a superb debut for the green and white as he established a new
school and pool record in the 1000 yard freestyle covering the
distance in 10:15.01.
Senior Matt
Jennings (Fairfax, Va./Robinson) captured two individual
victories on the day, picking up his first in the 50 freestyle with
a time of 22.71. Jennings then took first in the 100 backstroke
clocking in at 55.63.
Sophomore Steve
Yeager (Sinking Spring, PA/Wilson) matched Jennings'
individual wins with a pair of victories in the 200 and 500
freestyle races. Yeager touched the wall at 1:51.13 in the 200
before securing first in the 500 with a time of 5:06.51.
The Spartans would take
three more individual wins in the 200 IM, 100 freestyle, and the
100 breaststroke. Andrew Demarest (Galloway,
N.J./Abesegami) picked up the 200 IM victory with a time
of 2:07.10 while the 100 freestyle belonged to Garrett
Higgins (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) who clocked a 50.48 in
the event. Steve Tobin (Estell Manor, N.J./Holy
Spirit) took the 100 breaststroke, touching the wall first
with a time of 1:04.40.
York also won two
relay events, the 200 IM and the 200 freestyle. AJ Bean
(Ijamsville, Md./Urbana), Tobin, Clark Arnold
(York, Pa./Northeastern), and Ben Hilt (Mt. Joy,
Pa./Hempfield) grabbed the 200 IM while Gottschalk,
Demarest, Richard Janosky (Dover, Pa./Dover), and
Jennings won the 200 freestyle.
The Spartans
return to the pool on Saturday, November 1, as they travel to
Marymount. The green and white, who lost to the Saints last season
at the York College Natatorium, square off with Marymount in the
CAC tilt at 2:00 pm.
