FREDERICKSBURG, VA-The York College women's soccer squad
needed double overtime but the Spartans overcame the Mary
Washington Eagles 2-1 in double overtime in Capital
Athletic Conference action on Saturday in Fredericksburg, VA.
The Spartans improve to 6-2-1 overall and 3-0 in the
CAC while Mary Washington falls to 4-3-1 overall and 1-1 in
the league.
The first half featured a majority of the play occurring in the
middle of the field as each team had one shot. The Spartans'
one shot came on target while the Eagles had three corner kicks to
just one for York.
The Spartans broke the ice when senior Erin Kuhn
(Turnersville, N.J. /Washington Township) turned a
Jill Stanley (Stewartstown, Pa.
/Kennard-Dale) thru ball into a goal in the game's
63rd minute. The goal was Kuhn's team-leading fifth of the
year.
The Spartans looked like they were going home with a win in
regulation but the Spartans committed a foul in the box with 23
seconds left in regulation. The Eagles' Hannah Pearson
converted the penalty kick, tying the game and forcing the
overtime.
The green and white won the match in the 101st minute as
freshman Steph Mergler (Street, Md./North Harford)
converted a Kuhn cross for the game-winning goal. The tally is
Mergler's first collegiate tally.
Freshman Desiree Halaka (Southampton,
N.Y./Southampton) earned the win in goal as she made one
save in 100:47 of work. Laura McCarthy was saddled with the loss as
she allowed the two Spartan goals while she notched five saves.
The Spartans held a 10-5 advantage in shots while the Eagles won
the battle of corner kicks, 3-2.
York returns to action on Tuesday as they host DeSales
University. Game time at Graham Field is set for 4:30 pm.
