HILTON HEAD, SC-The York College men's
tennis team earned their second straight win, and first Capital
Athletic Conference victory of the year, as they defeated Catholic
University 7-2 in conference action on Wednesday in Hilton Head,
SC. The Spartans improve to 2-2 overall and 1-0 in the CAC while
the Cardinals fall to 2-3 overall and 0-1 in the conference.
The green and white earned all three doubles
points. The Spartans' first doubles team, sophomore Ryan
Fickes (York, PA/ Dallastown) and sophomore Josh Kulp (Souderton,
PA/ Homeschooled), outlasted the Catholic duo of Andrew Kracht and
Jonathan Lewis 9-8 (7-2). Sophomore Tim Mowrer (Gordonville, PA/
Pequea Valley) and Joel Trimmer (Hanover, PA/ Hanover) combined to
post an 8-3 win at the second doubles while Brian Wiesemann
(Leonardtown, MD/ Leonardtown) and Jeff Mansfield (Bartonsville,
PA/ North Harford) notched an 8-4 win at third doubles.
In singles play, Mowrer earned a 6-4, 6-3 win in
the number one singles match. Catholic recorded their two wins in
the second and third singles flights but the Spartans bounced back
to win the fourth, fifth, and sixth singles flights. Dave
Tabachnik (Manalapan, NJ/ Manalapan) earned a 6-2, 6-1 win at
fourth singles and was followed by a 6-4, 6-2 win by Kulp in the
fifth singles flight. Kulp is now 4-0 at fifth singles in 2007.
Wiesemann notched a 6-2, 6-4 win at the sixth singles match with
Nikolai Wajda.
The Spartans close out their spring trip on
Thursday with a match against Adrian (MI) at 1:00 pm.
