DeLany Earns CAC Championship as Spartans Finish Close Second

SALISBURY, MD – The York College women's cross country squad put together a fantastic performance in the 2013 Capital Athletic Conference Championship meet at Winter Park Place in Salisbury, MD on Saturday morning.

Not only did the Spartan team have a stellar day, but juniors Caroline DeLany (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) and Jess Miller (Dauphin, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) finished one-two in the race. DeLany earned the individual title with a time of 22:27.30 while teammate Miller was just over three second back in second with a time of 22:30.90. The duo finished three-four at last year's championship with Miller just edging DeLany at Frostburg State.

The Spartans finished second as a team, registering 41 points to finish 10 points back of team champion Christopher Newport. It is the second straight year the Spartans have just missed out on a women's championship as they fell to Mary Washington by six points in 2012. Mary Washington finished a distant third followed by Marymount and St. Mary's as those schools rounded out the top five.

The championship for DeLany also earns her the Capital Athletic Conference Runner of the Year. The top finish was her first win of the year.  Both DeLany and Miller earn first-team All-Capital Athletic Conference honors as a result of their finishes.

The Spartans had three other runners earn All-CAC honors as Jenna Roberts (Stewartstown, Pa./Kennard-Dale), Alicia Dillman (Leola, Pa./Conestoga Valley), and Kathleen Cannon (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill) all placed inside the top 15.

Roberts just missed on being a first team honoree as she placed ninth with a time of 23:01.00. It is a huge improvement over last year's 35th place finish at Frostburg. Dillman and Cannon, a pair of Spartan freshmen, finished 14th and 15th respectively. Dillman crossed the line in a time of 23:29.10 while Cannon was just over a second behind at 23:30.90.

Freshman Kasey Fogelsanger (Owings Mills, Md./Mercy) was the next Spartan to cross the line, as she placed 21st with a time of 23:47.50. Senior Rachel Berninger (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine) was the seventh Spartan to place within the top 30 of the race as she finished 28th with a time of 24:12.90.

First-year head coach Stephen LoBianco was thrilled with the performance of his squad.

"Every girl stepped up today with PRs from four of the top five," said LoBianco. "Caroline was patient and let the race come to her, and was able to pass Jess in the kick at the end. I can't say enough about how big of a step on the right direction this was for us. None of my top five are seniors this year so we are back for it next year. Now the focus switches to regionals in two weeks."

DeLany's championship and subsequent Runner of the Year award mark just the second time in school history that a Spartan runner won the women's championship and been named the runner of the year. Mandy Parshall last accomplished both honors at the 2010 CAC Championships.

The Spartans return to action at the 2013 NCAA Mid-East Regionals on Saturday, November 16.  The regional is hosted by Muhlenberg College at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA.
