YORK, PA – York College hosted Frostburg State University in a Capital Athletic Conference match for the Spartans' 2013 senior night. Unfortunately for the Spartans, the Bobcats spoiled the festivities as they swept the Spartans in three to notch the conference victory.
This loss brings the York College Spartans to 15-12, and 2-3 in the conference. The win for Frostburg State lifts them to 6-23, and 3-3 in the conference. The game scores were 25-20, 25-21, and 25-23.
The Green and White got off to a great start with Kristin Martinak (Hanover, Pa. / South Western) grabbing a great dig off of the net and allowing senior Brittany Hicks (Dover, Pa./York Catholic) to finish off the kill. The Spartans started off the first game going on a 9-2. It didn't take long for the Bobcats to answer as they went on a 14-2 run, with nine of those points coming off of Aimee Petrides' serve. York was unable to catch up to FSU's lead and the Bobcats took game one with the five-point win.
The Spartans were able to get off to a 4-2 start in the second set with Hicks providing a couple kills early. A 7-2 run by York would allow them to get ahead 14-9. Frostburg fashioned a number of comebacks in this set as they went on another big run during this game. They went on a 12-3 spurt to take a 21-17 lead over the Spartans. York fought back to tie the game at 21-21 after a few good plays by Karli Hawxhurst (Prince Frederick, Md. / Calvert). Hawxhurst managed to drill back-to-back aces and grabbed a great dig to help the Spartans come back in this game. The Bobcats called a quick timeout and came out with a bang, scoring the final four points of the set to take a 2-0 match lead, 25-21.
York took out most of their starters for this set after seeing too many errors. The errors on the Spartans were a big factor in the two game deficit. The start of set three was back and forth as neither team was able to separate themselves at all. Spartan Katherine Graziano (Elkridge, Md. / Archbishop Spalding) got her turn to serve as she allowed her team to rally seven straight points to jump ahead 17-15. The Bobcats rallied off six straight points off of four Spartan errors to regain control of this game at 21-17. York's Katie Huston (Ellicott City, Md. / Mount Hebron) finally was able to get the serve back for the Green and White as they went on a little five point streak of their own to regain the lead at 22-21. After another well taken time out, the Bobcats came out of the break strong going on a 4-1 streak as April Wolfe got the final point of then night.
York hit a season-low -.081 as they recorded 19 kills, 27 errors on 99 attempts. Alison Dorsey (Elkridge, Md. / Long Reach) was the only Spartan starter to hit in the positive as she had three kills with one error in eight attempts for a .250 attack percentage. Hicks led York with six kills while Graziano paced the defense with 10 digs. Martinak handed out a team-high 10 assists.
Brianna Teets had an impressive match as she registered seven kills and a .500 attack percentage. Petrides notched a match-high 12 digs while she also had eight kills. April Wolfe added 11 digs, six kills and two aces.
The Bobcats hit .090 for the match while the banged out 14 service aces.
Prior to the match, York honored Hicks, Amanda Mackey (Whiteford, Md. / North Harford), and senior student assistant coach Travis Bowman for their contributions to the Spartan program.
The Spartans will return to action on Saturday October 26 when they travel Christopher Newport for a tri-meet. The Spartan face CNU in a CAC match at 11:00 am followed by a non-conference contest against Washington & Lee at 1:00 pm in Newport News, VA.
