ELIZABETHTOWN, PA - The York College volleyball squad split their two matches at the first day of the Days Inn Blue Jay Classic on Friday afternoon in Elizabethtown, PA.
The Spartans downed host Elizabethtown 3-1 in the opener and fell to Cairn 3-2 in a five set thriller in the nightcap.
The Spartans defeated the Blue Jays by scores of 25-20, 34-32, 22-25, and 25-15. The Spartans were led by freshman Ijeoma Igwe (Windsor Mill, Md./Seton Keough) as she banged home 15 kills in the victory. Sophomore Emma Geisser (Rockville, Md./Magruder) was right behind Igwe as she notched a career-high 14 kills while she also had 18 digs. Geisser chipped with four service aces and one solo block.
Senior Amanda Mackey (Whiteford, Md./North Harford) recorded a career-high 11 kills as she hit an impressive .643 in the win. Mackey also had one solo block and two block assists.
Sophomore Allie Donahue (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) dished out a career-high 53 assists in addition to 17 digs, five service aces, and a block assist. Sophomore Katherine Graziano (Elkridge, Md./Archbishop Spalding) recorded a match-high 23 digs for the Green and White. Junior Katie Huston (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) recorded nine kills and 11 digs for the Spartans.
Juliana Mowen and Taylor Beck led the Blue Jays with 12 kills each. Carolyn Lukiewski recorded a team-high 19 digs while Mary Clyne had 36 assists and 15 digs.
In the second match of the day, Cairn outlasted the Spartans 25-22, 22-25, 25-21, 25-13, and 15-11. The loss snaps the Spartans five-game win streak.
Senior Brittany Hicks (Dover, Pa./York Catholic) led York with 13 kills while she also had five digs. Huston and Igwe each contributed 10 kills. Huston also had 13 digs and three block assists.
Donahue handed out 48 assists while she also had three service aces, 12 digs, and a solo block. Graziano notched a match-high 27 digs while Geisser had 12 digs of her own.
Nicole Spicer paced Cairn with 15 kills and nine digs. Brigid Shehan recorded a double double with 13 kills and 18 digs. Erin Greenwood handed out 44 assists while she also recorded 18 digs.
The Spartans are now 10-3 overall and will return to action on Saturday during the second day of the tournament. York faces Rochester at 10:30 am and Cortland at 12:30 pm in Elizabethtown.
