BETHLEHEM, PA – The York College volleyball squad started off the 2013 season with a pair of three game wins on Friday night during the opening round of the 2013 Moravian College Greyhound Premiere Volleyball Tournament in Bethlehem, PA.
The Spartans defeated Centenary College 25-5, 25-3, and 25-16 and then downed Alvernia 25-15, 25-16, and 25-19 in the nightcap.
In the day's opening match, junior Katie Huston (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) powered the efficient Spartan offense with seven kills and a .462 attack percentage. Sophomore Emma Geisser (Rockville, Md./Magruder) added six kills and a .417 attack percentage. Freshman Sarah Wuktich (East Greenville, Pa./Southern Lehigh) chipped in five kills in her Spartan debut.
Sophomore setter Allie Donahue (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) handed out 14 assists while Kristin Martinek (Hanover, Pa./South Western) dished out nine helpers of her own. Senior Brittany Hicks (Dover, Pa./York Catholic) led the Green and White on defense with eight digs while sophomore Cassie Miller (Odenton, Md./Arundel) banged out six service aces in the win.
The Spartans hit .333 in the victory over the Cyclones.
The Green and White kept in going in the second match against the Crusaders. Huston registered a match-high 12 kills as she hit a blistering .556 with six digs for the Spartans. Hicks added nine kills and three digs while Geisser had seven kills for York. Donahue dished out 38 assists while she also had three service aces and four digs.
Katherine Graziano (Elkridge, Md./Archbishop Spalding) paced York's defensive effort with 18 digs while Geisser notched 10 digs of her own.
York hit .386 for the match while they held Alvernia to a .188 attack percentage.
The Spartans advance to the championship bracket of the tournament. York will face host Moravian on Saturday morning at 10:00 am and then will square off against Swarthmore at 12:00 pm to determine the tournament championship.
