ALTOONA, PA – The York College volleyball squad ended their regular season with a pair of non-conference wins at Penn State Altoona on Saturday afternoon in Altoona, PA. The Spartans knocked off Pitt-Bradford 3-2 in their opener and followed that with a 3-1 win over Altoona in the nightcap.
The Spartans are now 9-25 overall and the two straight wins are the first time this year that York has won back-to-back matches. Altoona and Bradford both ended the season with identical marks of 9-22.
York captured the match against Pitt-Bradford by scores of 19-25, 25-16, 21-25, 25-9, and 15-9. The Spartans received 13 kills from senior Melissa Patterson (Edgewood, Md./South River) while the Spartans' middle hitter also had a solo block and a pair of block assists. Freshman Alison Dorsey (Elridge, Md./Long Reach) banged out 11 kills while she made only two errors in 25 attempts as she continues to turn it on late in her first year in the Green and White. Dorsey also had two solo blocks and three block assists.
Senior Dani Mastroieni (Chalfont, Pa./Gwynedd Mercy) was the third Spartan in double figures in kills as she added 10 while she also had nine digs and two service aces. Freshman setter Allie Donahue (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) had another brilliant match as she handed out 43 assists while she also collected 12 digs, a pair of service aces, and three kills.
Senior libero Ashley Rineman (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) had 26 digs to lead a solid Spartan defensive effort. Rineman also registered a team-high three service aces in the win.
In the win over Altoona, the Spartans played minus the services of Donahue who was injured in the Bradford match. York didn't skip a beat as they posted a 25-20, 19-25, 25-22, and 28-26 win. Freshman Brandi Kinard (Seven Valleys, Pa./Spring Grove) came off the bench to record 32 assists, 14 digs, eight kills and service ace as the Spartans' setter in the match.
Sophomore Katie Huston (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) banged out 10 kills to lead the Spartan offense. Huston also had 10 digs and a pair of block assists for the Green and White. Dorsey had another strong match with nine kills, two solo blocks, and a block assist. Mastroieni chalked up eight kills, 17 digs, and three block assists for YCP.
Rineman provide a team-high 28 digs while she was also a perfect 25-for-25 in service receive while she had two aces and no errors in 22 service attempts for the match.
The Spartans begin their post-season journey on Tuesday night when they travel to St. Mary's College to face the Seahawks in the opening round of the Capital Athletic Conference tournament. Game time in St. Mary's City is set for 7:00 pm.
