Volleyball Downs Goucher in Five-Set Thriller
TOWSON, MD – The York College Spartans earned a hard-fought 3-2 non-conference victory over Goucher College on Tuesday night in Towson, MD. The Spartans improve to 6-20 overall while the Gophers fall to 7-18.
The game scores were 25-19, 23-25, 21-25, 25-19, and 15-8.
The win was unusual for the Green and White as it was the first five-set win of the year. All five of York's previous wins had come in three games.
The Spartans were led by sophomore Katie Huston (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) as she drilled home 10 kills while she hit .233 for the match. Senior Melissa Patterson (Edgewater, Md./South River) added eight kills, three block assists and a service ace while she hit .263 in the win.
Freshman Allie Donahue (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) handed out 40 assists while she also had 11 digs, two kills, four service aces, and two block assists. Senior Ashley Rineman (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) notched a team-high 23 digs while senior Dani Mastroieni (Chalfont, Pa./Gwynedd Mercy Academy) contributed 20 digs, eight kills, three service aces and two block assists.
The Spartans finished the match hitting .130 including .237 in set four and .316 in the deciding fifth set.
Megan Chalk led the Gophers with 17 kills while she also had a match-high 25 digs. Tori Rain contributed 20 digs, 22 assists, and eight kills.
The Spartans return to action on Saturday when they travel to Haverford to face Johns Hopkins and Haverford in a non-conference tri-meet. York faces the Blue Jays at 2:00 followed by the match against the home standing Fords at 4:00 pm.
