Spartans Lose Two Tough Games At Blue Jay Classic
ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – The York College volleyball squad lost two matches during the opening day of the Blue Jay Classic at Elizabethtown College on Friday night. The Spartans fell to hosting Elizabethtown 3-0 and lost 3-2 to the University of Rochester.
With the losses the Spartans drop to 3-14 overall while Elizabethtown improves to 10-3 and the University of Rochester stands at 12-3 overall.
In the game against Elizabethtown the Spartans fought till the end but seemed to come up just short in each set. The Blue Jays won by scores of 25-23, 25-23 and 25-16. Pacing the Green and White on offense with nine kills was freshman Emma Geisser (Derwood, Md./Magruder). Dani Mastroieni (Chalfont, Pa./Gwynedd Mercy Academy) and Katie Huston (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) also added eight kills each.
Senior Ashley Rineman (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) had a strong game recording a team-high 33 kills. Setter Allie Donahue (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) handed out 29 assists while she also tallied 13 digs.
Against the University of Rochester the Spartans came out ready to battle but unfortunately lost a tough fight in five sets. The Yellowjackets won by scores of 25-21, 21-25, 19-25, 26-24, 15-11. Leading the way on offense for the Spartans was Huston with 13 kills, only three errors and a .244 hitting percentage. Also playing strong offensively was Geisser with 13 kills and Mastroieni with 12 of her own. Donahue once again did a good job setting and recorded 39 total assists.
Rineman played an even stronger game then the first and ended up with a career-high 43 digs. Despite the solid play, York could not seem to finish on top.
The Spartans looking to get back in the win column return to action on Saturday when they face Hamilton College at 1:00 pm followed by a match against Ramapo College at 3:00 pm.
