YORK, PA – The York College volleyball squad picked up a much-needed victory on Tuesday night, besting the Wesley College Wolverines 3-0 in a Capital Athletic Conference match in York.
Both teams are now 3-12 while the Spartans are 1-1 in the conference while the Wolverines are 0-2 in the loop. The match scores were 25-23, 25-16, and 25-15.
In game one, the two squads went back and forth with neither team holding more than a three point lead until the Spartans were in the midst of a 4-0 run that built the lead to 18-13. The Spartan lead bounced between three and five over the next few points before the Wolverines finally tied the game at 23. Freshman Alison Dorsey (Elkridge, Md./Long Reach) put the Spartans up with a kill and then a Wolverine attack error ended game one.
The Wolverines took an early lead in game two. York trailed 13-10 before the Green and White fashioned a 7-0 run to take a 17-13 lead. The Spartans pushed the lead to 20-14 before the Wolverines scored two straight to cut the York advantage to 20-16. The Spartans ran off the final five points of the game to take the 2-0 lead.
Game three was much like game two as the Green and White trailed early. The Spartans ripped off a 10-3 spurt to take a 15-8 lead. York's lead would not fall below five the rest of the way as they picked up their third win of the year.
The Spartans received a very balanced offensive effort. Senior Melissa Patterson (Edgewater, Md./South River) tallied nine kills and no errors in 11 attampts for a blistering .818 attack percentage. Senior Dani Mastroieni (Chalfont, Pa./Gwynedd Mercy Academy) added nine kills and four digs of her own.
Freshman setter Allie Donahue (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) had a strong performance with 32 assists, nine digs and a pair of service aces. Senior Ashley Rineman (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) notched a match-high 13 digs for York.
Sophomore Katie Huston (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) also played well with seven kills and a .353 attack percentage while Dorsey had six kills and .545 attack percentage.
Lindsay DiMuzio led the Wolverines with eight kills while Christina Marruffo handed out 19 assists. Meghan Marshall led the Wolverines' defensive effort with 11 digs.
The Spartans return to action on Friday when they travel to Elizabethtown to participate in the Blue Jay Classic. They will face the host Blue Jays at 3:30 pm followed by a contest against Rochester at 5:30 pm.
