Spartans Split Saturday Pair at Dickinson
CARLISLE, PA – The York College volleyball squad finished their stay at the 2012 Dickinson College Red Devil Invitational by splitting their two Saturday matches. The Spartans dropped a 3-0 decision to Lebanon Valley before besting the host Red Devils 3-0 in the second contest.
The Spartans are now 2-7 overall while the Red Devils are 1-8 and the Flying Dutchmen are 6-3.
Lebanon Valley downed the Spartans by the scores of 25-13, 25-20, and 25-22. The Spartans had leads in both the second and third matches but couldn't capture a set in the loss.
Sophomore Kristin Martinak (Hanover, Pa./South Western) continued her outstanding tournament as she tallied 10 kills as she hit a team-high .333. Three other Spartans added five kills each as the Spartans managed just 27 kills in the match. Freshman Brandi Kinard (Seven Valleys, Pa./Spring Grove) handed out 12 assists while she also had three digs and a service ace.
Senior Dani Mastroieni (Chalfont, Pa./Gwynedd Mercy Academy) paced the Spartan defense with 14 digs while she also had three service aces, five kills and two block assists. Fellow senior Ashley Rineman (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) was the other Spartan in double figures in digs.
The scores in the Spartans' win over Dickinson were 25-15, 25-23, and 25-19. Junior Jessica Moyer (Reading, Pa./Holy Name) and Mastroieni combined to pace the Green and White offense. Moyer banged out a match-high 13 kills as she hit .267 for the match. She also had 13 digs and a service ace for York. Mastroieni added 12 kills and 12 digs for a double-double of her own. Sophomore Katie Huston (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) chipped in with nine kills and a .444 attack percentage.
Freshman Allie Donahue (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) handed out 20 assists for York while Kinard contributed 17 helpers. Rineman led the defensive effort with 16 digs in the three-game win.
The Spartans return to action on Wednesday evening when they travel to Salisbury University to face the Sea Gulls in the Capital Athletic Conference opener for both squads. Game time is set for 7:00 pm at the Maggs Center.
