Spartans Strong Play Downs Swarthmore
YORK, PA – The York College volleyball squad avenged last Saturday's 3-0 loss to Swarthmore with a 3-0 victory of their own over the Garnet in the second round of the York College Volleyball Invitational at Charles Wolf Gym in York on Friday night. The Spartans, winners of three straight, improve to 9-6 overall while Swarthmore falls to 11-3 for the year.
The game scores were 25-22, 25-19, and 25-8.
In the opening set, the Spartans jumped out to an early 5-2 advantage. The Garnet pulled to within one before York reeled off six straight points to take an 11-4 lead. The Garnet clawed back into the set, trimming the York lead to two at 15-13. From there, the two teams would not be separated by more than five points until York fashioned a quick three point spurt that put them up 22-16. Swarthmore was undeterred as they scored six of the next eight points, trimming the York lead to just two at 24-22. The Spartans captured the game point on senior Heather Bucher's kill as the Green and White notched the first blow in the game.
The second game was tight from the beginning. Neither team held more than a three-point lead until the very end of the set. With Swarthmore up three, 17-14, the Spartans fashioned one of their best runs of the year. York outscored the Garnet 11-2 to capture the second set. The run featured three Jess Moyer kills, one kill from Noelle Bricker, two Cortni Rentzel service aces, and a pair of block assists from Moyer and Bricker as the Spartans stunned the Garnet.
If set two was some of the best York has played all year, the Green and White topped it to start the third set. York began the set with 14 straight points as Rentzel served the Spartans to the huge lead. The Spartans started off the set with an 18-2 lead and combined with the ending run in set two, York outscored Swarthmore 29-4 during that stretch.
The Spartans were very balanced in the win. Moyer had a team-high eight kills while Bucher and fellow senior Julie Coombs chipped in with seven each. Junior libero Ashley Rineman recorded a match-high 27 digs while Rentzel added 17 digs and 30 assists. Bucher was the third Spartan in double figures for digs as she collected 10. Rentzel also had four service aces in the victory.
Maggie Duszyk led Swarthmore with six kills while Hilary Santana notched a team-high 25 digs. Allison Coleman had 18 assists for the Garnet.
York hit .171 for the match while Swarthmore hit just .045 for the contest.
The Spartans return to action on Saturday at 12:00 pm as they face Centenary in the final match of pool play. The Spartans will then play their second game of the afternoon at 4:00 pm.
