Spartans Notch First Conference Win of 2011; DuMars Records Win #300

YORK, PA – The women's volleyball team capture their first Capital Athletic Conference victory of the year on Wednesday night against Hood College. The Spartans won in three games by the score of 25-10, 28-26, and 25-18. The Spartans' victory improved them to an overall record of 6-3 and 1-1 in the CAC.  The Blazers of Hood College are now 3-3 overall and 0-1 in the conference.

The victory was the 300th in the Spartan career of head coach Sue DuMars. The Spartan mentor now boasts a mark of 300-222 in her 16 years at the helm of the York volleyball program.

In game one, the Spartans jumped out to a 15-3 lead that was sparked by three aces by Cortni Rentzel, Ashley Rineman, and Heather Bucher. The attacks were very spread out throughout the first game, which kept the Spartans rolling as they posted a comfortable win in the first game.

The second set was a very interesting game for both sides. Early on, there were many lead changes, a trend that continued through the course of the game. Late in the game, York had a 22-20 lead. Hood aced the Spartans and scored the next three points for the 23-22 lead. Bucher buoyed the Spartans with a kill that got the Green and White back on track. Rentzel then recorded a dump kill that caught the Blazer defense off guard. Bucher finished off the game for York as she drilled home an ace to give York the 28-26 decision.

The start of the third game was around the same as the second game as the lead yo-yoed back and forth. The set was tied three times before the Spartans went on a quick 3-0 run to take a 10-7 lead. The set would be tied again at 11 but Melissa Patterson and Jessica Moyer provided sparks in the front row as York grew the lead to six at 19-13. Hood tallied three straight points, cutting the York lead in half but Patterson banged out another big kill as the Spartans outscored Hood 6-2 over the final eight points of the match.

Moyer was outstanding as the sophomore led the Spartans with 10 kills and a hitting percentage of .444. Bucher and Patterson that both had seven kills to back Moyer. Julie Coombs also contributed with six kills. Rentzel dished out 39 assists in the victory while she also had 11 digs for the Spartans. Rineman and Jana Arentz each gave the Spartans double digit digs as Rineman had a match-high 16 while Arentz contributed 10. The Spartans combined for eight blocks with the help of Bucher, Patterson, Coombs, Katie Huston, Noelle Bricker, Dani Mastroieni.

The Spartans return to action on Friday against Gettysburg at 7:00 PM at Wolf Gymnasium.
