The Beat Goes On as Streak Reaches 17

YORK, PA – The York College volleyball squad increased it's school-record win streak to 17 with their 3-0 Capital Athletic Conference victory over Stevenson University on Tuesday evening in York.

The Spartans improve to 18-1 overall and 3-0 in the CAC while the Mustangs fall to 16-3 overall and 2-2 in the conference. The Spartans won the match by scores of 25-19, 25-22, 25-20.

Junior Heather Bucher was a key to the Spartan win as the outside hitter had seven kills and hit .467 while she also had nine digs, two block assists, two service aces and an assist. The Spartans' senior duo of Alishia Waltermyer and Alysse Beshore each had six kills and one error. Waltermyer hit .312 with two solo blocks and a block assist while Beshore hit .263 with three block assists.

Junior Cortni Rentzel distributed 26 assists while she also had five digs. Junior Julie Coombs had seven kills, nine digs, a solo block and a block assist while she also hit .357 in the match.  Sophomore Ashley Rineman paced the stellar Spartan defensive effort with 10 digs while she also had a pair of service aces.

The Spartans hit .242 for the match but they did commit eight service errors in the match.

The Spartans found themselves down early in the first set as the Mustangs jumped out to a 5-1 lead. The Spartans tied the game at six but Stevenson scored six of the next eight points to take a 12-8 advantage. The Mustangs maintained the lead at four before the Spartans slapped their guests with a 7-1 run to take a 17-15 lead. The match would be tied two more times, at 17 and at 19, before the Spartans fashioned a 6-0 run to close out the first set, 25-19.

The second set featured back-and-forth play, as neither team held more than a three-point lead. The set was tied a whopping 14 times with the final tie coming at 21. The Spartans scored four of the final five points to capture the three-point set victory.

The third set was also a closely played game. York trailed early but after the set was tied at six, the Spartans took the lead and never gave it back. The Spartan lead reached five on four different occasions as York extended their win streak in straight sets.

York returns to action on Friday night when they travel to the Susquehanna University Hampton Inn Crusader Classic in Selinsgrove, PA. The Spartans face Washington & Jefferson at 6:00 pm followed by a match against Rowan at 8:00 pm.
