NEWPORT NEWS, VA – The York College women's track and field squad closed out their stay at the 2014 Capital Athletic Conference Championships with a fifth place finish on Sunday in Newport News, VA.
The Spartans totaled 43 points in the two-day championships. The host CNU Captains earned the team championship with 198 points. Mary Washington placed second while Salisbury finished third.
The Spartans got an individual championship from sophomore Jenna Roberts (Stewartstown, Pa./Kennard-Dale) as she was victorious in the 3000 steeplechase. Roberts finished with a time of 12:02.26 to earn ten team points for York. Freshman Kasey Fogelsanger (Owings Mills, Md./Mercy) notched a PR in the event as she completed the race in a time of 12:58.61.
The Green and White also got a pair of strong finishes in the 800. Freshman Emily Cronise (Boonsboro, Md./Boonsboro) finished third in the race, clocking in with a time of 2:19.86. Senior Rachel Berninger (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine) finished with a PR as she placed fourth with a time of 2:21.59.
In the 1,500 meter race, junior Caroline DeLany (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) registered a fifth place finish as she concluded the race with a PR time of 4:59.81.
Sophomore thrower Abby Rhodes (Hanover, Pa./Hanover) earned points for York in the shot put as she placed fifth with a best throw of 10.73 meters.
York had a pair of relay teams register top five finishes. The 4x100 relay team composed of Courtney Rice (Frederick, Md./Urbana), Bria Jones (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford), Dana Mangano (Westminster, Md./Westminster), and Bethany Miller (York, Pa./York Suburban) finished fifth with a time of 52.24. The 4x400 squad of Roberts, Shannon Kusery (Ewing, N.J./Ewing), Rice, and Cronise also placed fifth with a time of 4:21.66.
The Spartans close out their regular season on May 12 when they travel to the Tuppany Twilight Last Chance Meet hosted by Swarthmore.
