NEWPORT NEWS, VA – The York College women's track and field team sits fifth after the opening day of the 2014 Capital Athletic Conference Championships at Christopher Newport University in Newport News, VA on Saturday.
The Spartans received a pair of strong performances in the 10,000-meter race as Jess Miller (Dauphin, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) and Stephanie Bower (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) both finished in the points for York. Miller notched a fourth place finish for the Green and White as she crossed the line in a time of 40:29.36. Bower captured a sixth place finish as she finished the race with a time of 43:39.96.
Sophomore Bethany Miller (York, Pa./York Suburban) gave York four more points when she placed fourth in the pole vault as she cleared a height of 3.10 meters.
In the 100-meter dash preliminaries, Bria Jones (Medford, N.Y. / Patchogue-Medford) qualified for the finals as she notched a sixth place finish with a time of 13.10.
The championships continue on Sunday as the remainder of the events will be completed. The action kicks off Sunday morning at nine in Newport News.
