WEST CHESTER, Pa. – The York College women's track and field team opened up its 2013 outdoor season at West Chester University for the Golden Ram Invitational on Saturday afternoon.
The Spartan distance runners started out very strong in head coach Erick Camodeca's eyes, but he felt the other events struggled throughout the day.
"The weather was almost perfect for the distance kids," said Camodeca. "On the other hand, the weather was not ideal for all the other events and the cold wind gave us less than solid performances."
Jess Miller (Dauphin, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) raced incredibly strong, looking as good as she did during the indoor season. Miller finished the 10,000 meters in first place with a time of 39:17.20, just about 15 seconds ahead of second place. Nicole Danielewicz (Bensalem, Pa./Nazareth Academy) also raced well and earned herself a third place finish. Danielewicz crossed the line at 40:13.88. Rounding out the 10,000 for the Spartans was Chelsea McCracken (Dillsburg, Pa./Northern) with a time of 43:56.95.
In the 1,500 meters, coach Camodeca thought that Rachel Berninger (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine) looked good. Berninger finished in 29th place out of 66 runners with a time of 5:19.85. Nikki Fox (Southampton, Pa./William Tennent) also competed in the race. Fox finished in 5:39.30 and came in 44th place.
The Green and White also had a strong showing in the 5,000-meter run. Jenna Roberts (Stewartstown, Pa./Kennard-Dale) was the top finisher for the Spartans. Roberts came in 10th place with a time of 20:11.86. Emily Abell (Timonium, Md./Dulaney) and Abby Reagan (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) finished in 17th and 18th place with times of 21:07.09 and 21:12.64, respectively. Stephanie Bower (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) also had a great race and Coach Camodeca felt good about her finish. Bower came in 20th with a time of 21:15.96.
The Spartans return to action on Wednesday at the Elizabethtown Capital Area Classic. The meet is set to start at 2:00 pm.
