Women Nab Three Individual Titles; Spartans Finish Third at Indoor Championships
FAIRFAX, Va. – The York College women's indoor track and field team finished third out of five teams at the Capital Athletic Conference indoor championships on Sunday at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va. The Spartans had three athletes notch individual titles.
Mary Washington walked away with the team title after finishing with 155 total points, followed up by Salisbury in second with 133.5 points. The Spartans collected 88.5 points. Frostburg State and Wesley came in fourth and fifth with 52 points and 27 points, respectively.
Spartan head coach Erick Camodeca was disappointed with the overall finish of the team, but felt that there were still many excellent individual performances throughout the day.
Jess Miller (Dauphin, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) had an incredible race in the 5,000-meter run. She earned herself a first place finish and bested the field by over 15 seconds with a time of 18:59.91. Miller's effort also set a new school record, as well as a conference record. Fellow Spartan Nicole Danielewicz (Bensalem, Pa./Nazareth Acadmey) finished the race in 19:19.28 to earn third place. Chelsea McCracken (Dillsburg, Pa./Northern) earned a ninth place finish in 20:45.53.
Another Spartan to earn an individual title was Caroline DeLany (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora). DeLany won the mile race in 5:23.21, beating the other competitors by over five seconds.
The last individual title that the Spartans won was in the triple jump. Laura Rowlands (Dover, Pa./Dover) earned herself a repeat performance from last year's championships with a winning distance of 10.78 meters. With another title this season, Rowlands now has won a total eight CAC titles over her career so far. Rowlands also earned a second place finish in the high jump with a height of 1.52 meters.
In her first championships, Bria Jones (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) looked strong in sprints. Jones earned an impressive second place finish in the 60-meter dash with a time of 8.22, a personal best. She also finished in ninth place in the 200-meter dash with a time of 28.34.
Rachel Berninger (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine) looked strong in the 800 and earned herself a third place finish in 2:28.46. For her effort, Berninger recorded a personal best time. Jenna Roberts (Stewartstown, Pa./Kennard-Dale) also ran the 800, finishing in 2:30.93 and sixth place.
In the field, Bethany Miller (York, Pa./York Suburban) performed extremely well. Miller finished third in the pole vault with a jump of 2.88 meters. In the high jump Miller came in fourth place with a height of 1.47 meters. She also had a top-ten finish in the long jump, leaping 4.36 meters for eighth place. Dana Mangano (Westminister, Md./Westminister) earned herself a personal best in the triple jump with a distance of 10.12 meters and a third place finish. Mangano also came in ninth in the long jump, posting a leap of 4.35 meters.
Katie Shinn (Orange, Conn./Amity Regional) represented the Spartans in the throws. Shinn finished sixth in the weight throw after recording a distance of 4.35 meters.
The Spartans return to action next Sunday when they travel back to George Mason for the George Mason Last Chance Meet.
