Growth Continues as Spartans Compete at Maryland Invitational

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The York College women's track & field squad competed at the 2012 Maryland Invitational Saturday at the University of Maryland – College Park. The Spartans, one of only two Division III teams at the meet, finished tied for ninth of ten schools with six points.

"Overall another solid performance by both squads," Spartan head coach Erick Camodeca said referring to both York's men's and women's showings at Maryland. "We have the right mind set. As the season progresses we will really see where stack up against the conference. Right now I am really pleased with our results."

Mandy Parshall put together a solid performance for the Green and White as she competed in a pair of mid-distance events. The senior standout posted a 5:00.65 in the 1500 meters to snag 11th overall while she ran to an 11:16.13 in the 3,000 meters.

On the other end of the experience spectrum, freshman Jasmine Smith continues to display and develop her talent. She captured 12th in the 100 meters with a 12.93 time while she also competed in the 200 meters (27.63) and long jump (4.91 meters /  16' 1.5") competitions.

Laura Rowlands collected a pair of top-ten finishes including third in the triple jump. The sophomore posted a 10.90-meter (35' 9.25") result in the triple while she tied for ninth in the high jump with a 1.57-meter (5' 1.75") leap.

In the 5,000 meters, Jessica Miller and Caroline DeLany posted quality marks. Miller ran to a tenth-place 19:36.72 while DeLany's effort results in a 19:41.03 for 12th.

"Jess Miller and Caroline continue to improve," Coach Camodeca said, "and understand what it takes to compete at this level."

Freshman Deborah Fidele competed in four events for York at the Maryland Invitational. Fidele ran both the 200- and 400-meter races, recording 27.22 and 1:03.49 times, respectively, while also competing in the shot put and javelin.

Jackie Gibat, whose effort Camodeca is exceptionally pleased with, posted a 1:04.55 time in the 400 meters.

"[She] is continuing to impress us with her hardwork," Camodeca said of Gibat, "and it paid off today by her running a solid time for her in the 400."

In the shot put, Meaghan Jackson registered a toss of 10.03 meters (32' 11") to take 17th.

The Spartans also sent a contingent of throwers to the Towson Invitational in Towson, Md. Brittany DeManda posted a seventh-place 35.41-meter (116' 2") toss in the javelin while Katie Shinn grabbed 13th in the hammer with a 34.39-meter (112' 10") throw. Ashley Menniti competed in the shot put, discus, and hammer for York.

The Green and White return to action on Tuesday, April 3, as the Spartans host the York Tri-Meet on Tuesday. Featuring York, Gettysburg, and Messiah, the meet is slated to begin at 3:30 pm.
